'Acadia National Park' Started Off As 'Lafayette National Park' & Was So For 9+ Years.

Acadia National Park, as you can see from the image (above), only came to be in 1929.

The Park, however, was established, by Congress (with Presidential sign-off), in 1919, as ‘Lafayette National Park’.

Yes, after the French Revolutionary — Marquis de Lafayette.

The ‘Father of Acadia’ was an unashamed Francophile. Plus, WWI, which was mainly fought in France, was/had come to an end.

It is also fair to note that this whole area had been a part of ‘New France’.

Ironically, the name had to be changed, in 1929, to appease to American heiresses who happened to be ardent Anglophiles! Very funny. Harked back to the British vs French hostilities that plagued this region. That is another story I will talk about shortly.

For today, please note & remember that Acadia started off as Lafayette.
