There have been many local psychics and mediums, those who say they have a closer connection to the dead and metaphysical here in Downeast Maine.
Back in the early 2000s, a downtown Ellsworth medium told the Ellsworth American that though her gifts don’t include predicting your future or finding your lost items, she could connect with a loved one you miss via her.
She had the gift of clairaudience, which means that she hears things like thoughts. She told the Ellsworth American’s Jennifer Osborn in its October 30, 2008 edition that she “gives over” those thoughts that enter her head when she’s with a client. Many times those thoughts don’t make sense to her. And her ability came when someone she loved died.
One of the last centuries most famous psychics was from Maine. Alexander Tanous predicted Ted Kennedy would with the presidency in 1978. He was wrong. He also said that Richard Nixon will be remembered as one of the greatest presidents. That hasn’t happened yet, either. To be fair, Tanous always reminded his audience that he’s made a lot of errors. He’d expose others’ errors as well, most famously clairvoyant Lorraine Warren and also said that the Amityville Horror home was not actually haunted.
Born in Van Buren, Maine, Tanous said his parents were sensitive as well. His father dowsed and read cards.
Tanous, Wiggins quotes as saying, “I was born with a veil, and with a perfect Star of David and a mystic cross on my left hand.”
In third grade, he’d be in class and read his teacher’s mind. If he shook someone’s hand, he could tell if they were near death. He also worked on numerous police cases, finding missing children.
The Ellsworth American’s John R. Wiggins described Tanouous as “a slender, amiable fellow with piercing eyes,” and relays how Tanous had trouble learning until he used his psychic powers to do that in college. His body, he said, he’d left it over 3,000 times, astrally projecting. He was a registered guidance counsellor and school psychologist and taught courses on parapsychology.
How educated did he become? According to an article in the Psi Encyclopedia, he received a “bachelor’s degree (BA) in history and government through Boston College, a Master’s degree (MA) in philosophy in 1961 from Boston College’s graduate school, a Master’s degree (MA) in theology in 1964 from Fordham University, a Doctorate of Divinity in 1965 from the College of Divine Metaphysics in Glendora, California”
And then there was a Master’s in counselling and guidance from the University of Southern Maine. That one came in 1973.
In an article for the Psi Encyclopedia, it says, “Tanous discovered he could enter an out-of-body state one day when he was playing at jumping off the stairs. After one jump, he looked back up the stairs and saw an image of himself at the top staring back and smiling. He named this double ‘Alex 2’. Similarly, he saw people around him who, when he described them to his parents and family friends, turned out to be deceased familiar members—a phenomenon he later discussed in his book Is Your Child Psychic?
“The most notable incident occurred in July 1937 when Tanous was selling newspapers with his brother Nolan, suddenly feeling that something terrible had happened to his father. They ran home and found he had suffered a serious accident, of which he died six weeks later.”
