Notes for the Week #28 (2026)

This week note covers the week of 6th–12th July.

Yes, I was there at the foot of the Eiffel Tower 9 years ago, and yes, I took this photo. I visited Paris on my way to Berlin for EuroClojure 2017, where I talked about Moving People with Clojure. It feels like a lifetime ago, maybe it was.

Today is a lazy day in sort of a contemplative way. I really did not feel like writing this week note, but this week is going to be busy so it’s now or never.

Last week went too quickly I think. I was busy with work, with three hours spent in commute every day, with my drum classes, and with tinkering on this website. Everyone in my family is doing well now health-wise, and I hope it stays this way. This week has many birthdays to celebrate, which means running around as well. The house is full of balloons and toys scattered everywhere. A keeps breaking out into “Happy Birthday to You” randomly.

I’ve been going to drum classes every morning I’m at home. I learned to play Everybody, Thinking Out Loud, and 21st Century Breakdown. My progress has been great, mostly because I could already play such songs before I stopped drumming a decade ago. The difficult ones are yet to come. But I’m loving getting back in the groove. I also walked around a little, not much physical activities last week otherwise. It’s not been raining and the heat is going up again.

My months long project at $WORK is finally ending. I can’t talk about it right now, but sooner or later it will be open sourced at the GoogleSQL repo. I’ll mention it when it does.

Last Friday, we randomly walked into an Egyptian dessert place in the evening. We ordered a dessert named Ruh Hayati, which turned out to be extremely sweet. Three of us couldn’t finish one serving together. The severe sweetness gave us headaches, which I later learned to be common by reading their reviews. I had a massive sweet tooth as a child, but now in my middle age I can barely eat such things.

I tinkered with this website again last week. I added an Upcoming page that lists my post drafts and ideas, and lets people vote on them. I hoping this will pressure me into writing and finishing posts more often. After being inspired by a conversation in the IndieWebClub BLR group about linking within websites, I made the Site Graph to visualize the same. It’s quite fun to click around and discover connections I forgot existed. Inspiration struck again another day in form of ShellSharks’ Stat Board, and I had to make up one of my own. I’ve always been a Quantified self enthusiast. The numbers will motivate me to write more. Surely.

I also hardened my Cloudflare security rules following the Keeping AI crawlers off my Forgejo server post by Harsh. I already have a Fail2ban based firewall¹, but lately the number of banned IPs is going over 30000, which is quite close to Cloudflare’s 50000 IPs limit, so I had to figure something out. These new rules are mitigating 60% more junk traffic so they seem effective.

Wife and I watched the Enola Holmes 3 movie. It was moderately interesting, both in terms of the mystery and the action. I don’t think I’m going to watch more of these again. Come to think of it, I didn’t watch anything else at all. Now that’s a mystery.
