Seeing how intently Liv was concentrating and how much danger they were in, Adam shut his mouth and watched her jab buttons on her unseen Lucid display. Sleek wings slid out from either side of the Helix, and rear jet engines ignited with a thundering rumble, transforming the vehicle into space-jet mode.
Liv reared her head back, and the Helix jackknifed upward in a steep climb, smoothly banking left to avoid an oncoming missile. A blossoming fireball appeared under them as an abandoned apartment building exploded. The following force of the explosion seemed to propel the Helix even faster upward. Leaving the gunboat and forested canals of Brooklyn far below, the Helix soared through the sunset-splashed clouds, cresting at a suborbital height and leveling out at a high cruising altitude.
Liv winked one eye and the ship’s blue autopilot light blinked on. The three settled in the amber-lit, wood-paneled lounge behind the cockpit, on tastefully tan padded banquettes molded along the curves of the Helix. Adam perched on the edge of one cushion, his hands between his knees. “What the hell was that all about?” he demanded. “Who are you people?”
