Somewhere on the internet there is a 16 year old who is crying about how he doesn’t have a girlfriend because of his “negative canthal tilt”.
As ridiculous as this sounds, there are a bunch of people who actually think like this. It has even got its own name, know as “looksmaxxing”.
If I had to explain it in layman terms then it basically means to maximise one’s physical appearance. Which sounds pretty alright at the start but the internet has started taking this thing in a different way.
The first time this term was heard was somewhere in 2010 and started gaining more traction after this guy called Clavicular.
A brief introduction to who this person is:
Clavicular (real name: braden eric peters) is a 20 year old whose internet name literally comes from the clavicle, which a pretty fitting name for someone who is obsessed with skeletal measurements. He became to be known from his looksmaxxing content, particularly because of him promoting bone smashing, cosmetic injections etc.
Keeping all of this stuff aside is asking why did he start all of this. The answer to this is pretty obvious which is that he was insecure. Like many people in the looksmaxxing community, he wanted to fix the things he disliked about himself. All of this led him to become quite literally obsessed with the way he looks like.
THE EFFECT OF THIS ON TEENAGERS:
One of the biggest problems with looksmaxxing is that it changes the way teenagers see others and themselves. Plus at this stage of life people care a lot about how they look. the feature which most people don’t even know about are becoming flaws that should be measured.
Instead of seeing people normally they start using some terms like:
For teenagers who are already at an age where they are naturally self conscious, this can be extremely damaging. The more one obsesses over looks the more it gets difficult for them. Instead of actually living their lives they compare themselves to some random strangers online. And eventually they stop seeing everyone as people and start seeing them only in terms of attractiveness.
With influential figures like clavicular, this mindset can become even more deeply ingrained into them. Many young people look up to creators like him and begin treating their advice as facts rather than opinions.
THE BLACKPILL IDEOLOGY BEHIND LOOKSMAXXING:
Blackpill ideology: It claims that a person’s genetics determines almost everything in life. Your facial features, height, bone structure and overall attractiveness decide your chances of finding relationships, making friends, and even succeeding in life.
Which is completely false. This just reduces a person’s in terms of their looks rather than other important qualities of an individual. The only people who believe this are the ones who have been successfully brainwashed by this whole looksmaxxing stuff.
I never knew successful people measured their chances in life by their jaw angle, eye shape or facial symmetry. Yet somehow it has convinced many teenagers that a few millimetres of bone structure can decide their entire future.
HOW IT MAKES A PERSON HATE THEIR OWN FACE:
It makes a person overanalyse their face and finding out flaws which weren’t there in the first place.A person who was once completely fine with their appearance can suddenly start believing that something is wrong with them. Taking care of how you look is not a bad thing but when it becomes an obsession, you start focusing only on what needs to be fixed instead of accepting yourself as a whole.
Don’t let these ideas get into your head and make you believe that your worth is decided by your appearance. And please do not make these looksmaxxers your role models, because there will always be another “flaw” to fix and another standard to chase.
