It’s been a couple of weeks since I’ve last had time to write for myself. Mostly because I’ve been buried in screeners for some awards voting and for two different festivals: Chicago International Film Festival and Virginia Film Festival. I’m presently at the latter where I’m introducing films like Peter Hujar’s Day, The Plague, and It Was Just an Accident. Having said that, I must say that maybe I’ve finally hit a wall.
I can’t wait to get back to Chicago and into the month of November when I can devote myself to a personal project I’ve been meaning to get off the ground for the last few weeks.
Still, this two week period hasn’t been without its highlights. I do love seeing old friends and celebrating film, particularly in a year where the range and depth of cinema seems greater than it’s ever been. I’ve also had some incredible theatrical experiences.
At Virginia I watched Kang Mi-ja’s Spring Night, a sporadic abstract tragedy involving an alcoholic wife and her sick partner in a downturn that often reminded me Days of Wine and Roses. Next to me during this movie was an empty seat and in the seat next
