You Haven't Formed an Opinion. You've Inherited One.

The TL;DR: We’re living in the age of pre-consumed culture. Before we watch, read, or listen, an algorithm has already delivered a verdict. Reaction clips, AI summaries, and spoiler clips mean most people aren’t forming original opinions on their own, they’re recycling ones they’ve already absorbed. It’s not that social media influences what we think after the fact. It’s increasingly shaping what we expect, feel, and believe before first contact even happens. For brands, this is both a warning and an opportunity; the work that breaks through creates genuine first impressions, experiences that land before the reactions do.

There used to be a moment between experiencing something and having an opinion about it. You would walk out of the theater, sit in the car, and just feel it – before the group chat, before the takes, before the algorithm influenced what you thought. Those moments are disappearing. The more urgent question now isn’t whether social media shapes our opinions after the fact, but whether we even arrive at an experience with a blank slate at all.

Today, opinions are formed before the experience happens. Social feeds collapse the gap between encountering something and reacting to it, pre-framing what’s “good” or “bad” before we get there. By the time something drops, there’s already a consensus, and instead of forming our own reactions, we follow suit. If the discourse says it’s bad, we skip it. If it says it’s good, we show up.

Layer in AI, and the gap closes completely. Before you’ve had a single original thought, the algorithm has already summarized the conversation, assigned a verdict, and delivered it to you. You’re no longer discovering, validating, or confirming; you’re inheriting. The opinion was assembled before you arrived.

A brand’s impact no longer starts when someone experiences your work, it starts when the verdict on that work gets written. Shape it, and you’re part of what people believe. Miss it, and you’re not recovering; you’re arguing with a decision that’s already closed.
