SOCIAL MOVES IN MINUTES. BRANDS MOVE IN QUARTERS

The TL;DR: By 2029, 71% of directors (and 67% of marketers) expect social data to be more influential than traditional market research, yet most organizations still aren’t built to move at that speed. Are brands actually set up for that shift? Social delivers a constant, real-time pulse on audience sentiment, but it remains largely siloed within marketing instead of shaping broader business decisions in the moment. The question is less whether social listening matters (we already know it does) and more whether organizations are structurally built to keep up with the speed of it.

Currently, there’s a clear disconnect between the speed of audience sentiment, trends, and feedback on social and the slower timelines most brands still operate on through campaign cycles, traditional research outputs, or quarterly reporting. Brands technically have access to this “always-on” pulse, but they are not always translating it into product, comms, or strategy decisions in the moment.

The brands that feel culturally relevant right now aren’t just present on social media, they are interpreting internet behavior in real time. They are treating social less like a content distribution channel and more like a live source of consumer intelligence. Signals from comments, community conversations, and creator trends don’t just inform posts, they shape what the brand does next.

For example, e.l.f. Cosmetics turned a TikTok behavior into a business opportunity. When customers began repurposing empty concealer bottles to mix custom shades, the brand quickly responded by offering free empty bottles with purchases over $15. Instead of simply reacting to the trend, they translated a social insight into a business decision that increased average order value and gave consumers something they were already asking for. That’s social intelligence in action.

This requires faster approvals, more cross-functional alignment, tighter feedback loops, and a willingness to act on immediate insights instead of waiting for complete research. In many ways, it challenges how companies have traditionally separated “marketing” from “business strategy.”

The bigger conversation becomes: what does it actually look like to treat social as a core intelligence source rather than just a content engine? Closing that gap is starting to define who wins culturally. We’re already seeing early examples of this shift take shape through brands adjusting inventory or product drops based on viral demand signals. We’re also seeing comms strategies evolve in real time based on audience sentiment in comment sections. Creator partnerships are increasingly acting as both distribution and insight loops into niche communities. Trend response is becoming more than reactive content, it’s shaping brand positioning and voice.

In contrast, brands relying on slower, more traditional inputs risk missing the moment or, even worse, showing up out of sync with how people are actually behaving and talking online. Ultimately, the opportunity isn’t about producing more social listening reports. It’s about rethinking how social can inform decision-making across the business. If social data is on track to rival, or even surpass, traditional market research in influence, the question isn’t whether brands should adapt, but whether they can evolve fast enough to actually use it.
