The Modern Dating Debrief

In the past two months, my “dating history” has gone something like this.

I’ve been ghosted after three weeks of talking. I found out a guy I’d been speaking to for a week has some... questionable ideas about what would “fix” the state of the country. And a man I’d barely exchanged more than a handful of messages with tried to call me. Twice. At 11pm.

To be fair, none of these are horror stories. Although the man with the questionable views did leave me feeling pretty unsettled.

Still, it’s left me feeling a bit rough.

The world feels so divided. Everyone seems to have such strong opinions, and so little respect for one another that ghosting has somehow become normal, no matter how many messages you’ve exchanged.

I swipe through so many profiles because there’s always something that just doesn’t sit right. But maybe the “not quite right” bit is me.

Maybe I don’t actually know what I’m looking for.

Or maybe it’s all just a bit terrifying.

We don’t know what people really think. We don’t know whether they’re kind, whether they’re judgmental, whether they’re safe, or whether we’re about to invest weeks of conversation only to end up thinking, well... what was the point of that?
