Let’s talk about the bridge where music meets film, TV and visuals: sync! Here’s how your favorite song ends up on your favorite shows, movies, advertisements and more! 🎬

  • What is it? Sync is when music is licensed for use in TV shows, movies, commercials, video games, and even social media posts. It’s short for synchronization, and sometimes it’s spelled like “synch.”

  • The Payoff: It can be a major revenue stream for artists that doesn’t require touring.

  • The “Blow Up” Factor: One strategic placement can put a song in front of millions overnight, turning a soundtrack into a viral moment. Ex:

    • Still thinking about Murder on the Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor in Saltburn (2024)

    • “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish, but make it orchestral on Bridgerton season 4

    • “Please Please Please” by Sabrina Carpenter somehow made “The Housemaid” trailer even more creepy

  • How to get synced: Artists typically land these deals through:

    • Music libraries

    • Labels and publishers

    • Sync agents

    • Direct pitching to brands or ad agencies

We sat down with Executive Producer of Universal Music Live and °1824 VP of Content & Creative Possum Hill to discuss the Twitch channel launch, which generated more than 322,000 minutes watched in its first week. Here are three key takeaways shaping UMG’s live-streaming evolution:

  1. The livestream is the content engine.

The stream is not just the content. It is the machine that makes the content. Universal Music Live engineers moments with short-form distribution in mind from the start. A stunt like Lexa Gates walking in a human-sized wheel for 10 hours turned into endless TikToks, Reels, and clips, extending its lifespan.

  2. Superfans appreciate real production.

A fan doesn’t always want to feel like they’re on FaceTime. Sometimes they want it to feel like they are in the room. If it feels low effort, it gets skipped.

  3. Lean into the energy of no retakes.

Possum treats livestreams like concerts. If it’s too polished, it’s boring. The best ones feel like a party where anything could happen. Think Doechii’s 2025 stream energy: chaotic, loud, and unfiltered. You had to be there. That unpredictability keeps people watching.

We are moving past just going live. The strategy now is to create moments that look professional, feel authentic, and are built to be shared.
