Devon Again’s Lethal Pen Game Might Kill You

I said it in the title and I’ll say it again here: Devon Again is one of those artists who will have you clutching your chest as if you’re in physical pain—if not when the first chords strike, then when her voice comes in and the lyrics land. That’s certainly what I was doing alone in my bedroom, listening to her newest single “this time it’s different.”

Her music is both familiar and extremely versatile. While her first EP, In Order, leans on a pop-centric buildup and release that feels borderline euphoric, her new music has a confidence that doesn’t need the standard pop structure to make you feel it. The tone-switch of her recent releases “snake the drain” and “this time it’s different” has both the grit of Geese and a vulnerability akin to Adrianne Lenker, which is—if you know me—my dream music rotation.

I discovered Devon Again in a way I haven’t with any other of my favorite artists. Earlier this year, I came across a video of someone with blue highlights in her hair performing at the Troubadour like her life depended on it (it was, of course, Devon). The video panned up to the balcony section where two people in particular were dancing and yelling the lyrics to her hit single “cherry cola” word for word. And those two people were none other than Olivia Rodrigo and Conan Gray (Courtesy of @devonagain.archive).

It feels full circle, then, to know that Devon Again will be performing as an opener on Olivia Rodrigo’s upcoming tour following the release of Rodrigo’s album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, and that she’s also one of the most recent additions to Dan Nigro’s label under Interscope Records. The recent developments and her evolved sound make her artist name Devon Again feel like a prelude to what’s coming next: a reintroduction to the artist she’s become.
