You expect it to be thrilling, to feel cool - like the first time you slipped on a VR headset and the world shifted around you. But when the car begins to move, you're struck by how ordinary it feels. Instead of thrilling, it's peaceful and relaxing. The car moves with quiet grace, soft and deliberate, as if the wheels barely touch the road. When the sun hits the window as it sets, you think yes, this is it, this is what technology was always meant to do.
karl and the light
Every day at 7pm, the city gets covered in gold. Every day at 7pm, we’re drowning in this thick, pink, yellow, and white light. It sweeps over the hills, the streets, the trees, the parks, everywhere. It’s so beautiful. It’s the light I dream of when I photograph weddings, the light that knocks on your door and says you know what?
this, this right here, this very moment, this is it. now!
Everything stops.
wedding photography
When potential clients ask about premium packages and add-on services for their wedding photography, I listen patiently to their questions about upgraded albums and extended hours. As I give them the quote, I think to myself
My dear, I am here to capture your love, your soul, that is my assignment. I will not leave until I’ve done so. This is my craft. Love, is in fact, my craft.
the hills and capitalism
Capitalism runs like water down the hills of San Francisco, slipping between Pacific and Larkin, Fillmore and Page, Divisadero and California. Even if you ran, the current would catch you. The city is already halfway through its own goodbye.
In the summer, when I walk the promenade in Beaulieu-sur-Mer toward Cap Ferrat, I think this is heaven on earth; we have brought heaven to earth. I want to care for it, love it. I want to wrap it in a velvet blanket and whisper, please, don’t ever change. The US on the other hand, I want to exploit, take advantage of. The US makes me feel like there is something more, like I’m always on the brink of finding something, only to return to Europe and feel like I’ve already won.
poetry
This has been my year of rest and relaxation. My mind has never felt this calm. Maybe spending one year living at the end of the world healed some part of me. San Francisco is so beautiful, and yet, despite its beauty, its optimism, even its slow unraveling, my thoughts are still. There is nothing urgent to say. No crisis. No sudden moves. No shocks to shake me loose. I’m no longer running toward nowhere. I’m simply here. I feel full, I don’t want to order dessert.
preserved like a jar of pickles
All my furniture is new. The wooden table doesn’t have a single scratch on it, and it feels like I should keep it that way? Should I buy one of those place mats and ask guests to put the glass on a coaster when I see their wine glass standing on my new wooden table? But aren’t we supposed to use things aren't we supposed to create scratches I think we’re meant to be worn out I think we should celebrate evidence of life
yes you too
you too are meant to have scratches
