It’s back to school time! I’m no longer packing lunches for my adult sons, but I do make some of their favorite desserts every now and then 😉. If you’re thinking about lunchbox treats or after school snacks, I’ve collected more than FORTY of my family’s favorite recipes over the years!

  • No list of treats would be complete without my beloved homemade Twinkies! The recipe is simple, fun and so much better than store-bought.

  • It’s hard to beat homemade applesauce for a healthy treat. I love this pink version (thanks to leaving the skins on my red apples!) and it’s sweetened with a little honey.

  • These blueberry bars were originally made as a kids snack! Over the years they have become a favorite of my whole family.

  • Inspired by the Levain Bakery cookie craze, my Smash Cookies are a big, thick, chocolaty pile of deliciousness. They are best served warm and slightly under-baked, so you get the feel of toasty, just shy of raw, cookie dough. Who can resist?!

MORE KID-FRIENDLY RECIPES

If you’ve recently made one of my recipes, please remember to leave a rating and review, it helps other people find the recipes! And please share photos of the bakes you’ve made, so I can see what you’ve created!

This summer I was invited to Utah to visit the folks at ThermoWorks and hang out with a bunch of bakers and BBQ pit masters. I knew Rose Levy Beranbaum had helped ThermoWorks develop some of their products, so they already had my trust. TBH, I accepted their invitation to the event hoping I’d get to spend some time with Rose, which I did, smart me! What I hadn’t anticipated was how many other incredibly talented and lovely people I would meet, including some OGs I’ve followed my entire career and was thrilled to see in person. They put together food science seminars, panels of the leaders in our industry, baking demos and outrageous BBQ. It was a geeky baker’s dream come true!

And, I became an even bigger fan of ThermoWorks and their products. You may recall my last Kitchen Crush was the Gravitas Scale, which is the best one on the market IMHO, but what you may not see as often is my instant read thermometers.

I love the NANO because it is accurate, fast, easy, and intuitive. I use it to check the internal temperature on loaves of bread, pies, sauces, and anything that has eggs in it. Temperature is the key to success in baking. Sometimes you can go by the color, but if you really want to be sure, really sure, something is done baking or cooking, the temperature is queen! I use it when I am testing recipes, so I can get an accurate baking time.

All of my opinions are my own and I have come to them through working with these products and many, many others to compare. I’d never want you to spend money on something I didn’t think worked really well. ThermoWorks is not paying me to say any of this (although I would love the opportunity to do a collab with them, hint, hint), but I do make a wee bit through an affiliate.
