Hello again lovely people and welcome to another ‘Dose of Whimsy’ instalment. In this monthly post I share all of my whimsical arty play and creative thoughts. 😊

I’ve been recently reading Phosphorescence by Julia Baird and mulling over the concept of ‘savouring’. The idea is that you are more likely to feel contentment if you take time to truly savour the small special moments in the present and past. I’ve been busy recently trying to get some commission work done to a deadline between baby caring duties. Amidst this cloud of hyper-focus I realised that I was starting to forget to stop and notice all the sweet little moments that were filling my days. I’ve finished the work now and discovered a moment of pure bliss this evening as I breastfed my baby to sleep without the distraction of my phone. A rich yellow glow from the setting sun flickered entrancingly on the wall as I felt profoundly peaceful as I watched my daughter’s face soften as she drifted into the land of nod.
What’s a sweet little moment that you’ve experienced recently worth savouring?
I’m really enjoying the process of creating a new zine every month. In the fast-paced internet world, it’s lovely to send out something tactile and lovely to my ‘Letterbox Legends’. I’m thankful to this Dose of Whimsy post for keeping me accountable to journal at least a little bit this month amongst my busy times finishing deadline commissions.
My artwork spotlight this month is my illustration for the 2024 Hills Winter Lantern Festival. I had been involved with the lantern festival for 8 years and delighted in helping to run such a magical community event. This poster design was such a delight to create and I was very pleased at how it managed to capture the whimsy of the event.

Like many orchids, the spider orchid is quite fussy in that it requires a symbiotic connection with a certain type of fungi to grow. The resemblance of the spider orchid to a spider is quite uncanny, arachnophobes beware!
Next time you’re out and about, look out for tiny native orchids and maybe take some time to sketch them too?
