bop inside Plug Data inside Ableton Live

We are going to build a simple interactive sketch using bop for Pure Data. This will demonstrated in Ableton but can also be done in your VST host of choice.

Adventures with Semisteps in Max 9

This is a common trap/feature/bug/quality of working in Max - the tension between left-hemisphere analytical tasks, and right hemisphere creative tasks. When you’re in the creative flow of music making, the last thing you want to do is stop to program your own reverb~. You might make an amazing reverb, but that is time you’re spending not making music. Both creating an amazing reverb,…

semisteps (the concept formally known as intermals)

semisteps Semisteps are a way of encoding a chord voicing and relative root pitch as a floating point value. Semisteps are currently implemented in bop .

E-Prime

E-Prime The term E-Prime refers a subset of english proposed built upon the principles of General Semantics set out by Alfred Korzybski. In E-Prime excludes variations of the verb “to be” including be , is , am , are , was , were , and been . In practice, the use of E-Prime “fosters a worldview in which the user perceives situations as changeable rather than static, and where…

An Introduction to Interactive Audio-Vision

An Introduction to Interactive Audio-Vision Let’s look at a general-purpose stack of tools for interactive video projection and integrated audio. We will look at running the stack on a single machine, as well as distributed across a network, as the scenario may call for.

portable video streaming approaches for art installations

The Ariel Encounter and Impossibility

Within the realm of the things we can possibly imagine to exist, there are things that are both possible and impossible. Then there are also those things beyond our ability to imagine them… and some of those things might be possible.

Matt Harloffs Tuning Sequence - and tuning sequence as functional application of art

When I build software for interfacing with music - I often iterate back and forth between writing tuning sequences and system refinement. On reflection I often over emphasise the development aspect of this process, as that is the part I find easier. It is analytical and stepwise, so to figure out what the next step is, you just need to think it through. The composition is much harder - here you…

Interfacing with distributed speaker arrays

Continuing work on a system I was exploring earlier here [ composing with particles ], I was working with TouchDesigner. Here I have moved to Max using its native particle system: [jit.shiva] and [jit.vishnu]. The patch processes the particle matrix to detect particle births, deaths, and movements, and transforms that data to an OSC schema for moving virtual sound objects through a distributed…

Neurotheology, aliens, and interpreting the immaterial

Standard scratchpad disclaimer. I am not tied to any of the perspectives below. I believe beliefs are best held lightly. In his discussion with Jefferey Mishlove, Andy Newberg notes the importance of “ being open to all paradigms. There is value in being reductionistic at times, and there is value in not ”. This strikes me as an example of an integral, or meta-modern stance, looking to…

Metamodernism and the evolution of consciousness

Maybe it’s just me but it seems like there is a collision of ideas going on. Some of the ideas go by terms like meta-modernism , integral , process philosophy , process theology , pan-experientalism , panpsychism , organic cosmology , and probably a lot more.

notes on OSC in Pure Data

Working on my PhD project, I am needing to send and receive telemetry data as OSC. While doing this I’ve noticed I am losing precision in my latitude and longitude readings. I have these stored as floating point values with 7 decimals of accuracy, though after parsing them in PD I am down to 4 decimal points. I suspect the OSCParse object is to blame here.

composing with particles

I am working on a project that requires me to move sounds around an irregular multi-speaker array system. The aesthetic aim is to have sounds travel through the space as if they are on the wind.

gyrosc 2 pd

Download gyrosc2pd.pd This patch receives OSC data from gyrosc , and tags them with a dynamic send object to be accessed globally via named receive objects. Available receives are shown on the right, and useful code snippets are provided for easy patching.

NEXTECH QC3868

The NEXTECH QC3863 ( available here ) is a small, battery powered, IP security camera, capable of recording to an internal SD card and being administrated via a mobile app. Streaming video is able to be accessed via local network, though it is poorly documented. This thing is insecure as shit. Keep it off the internet and untrusted networks as much as possible.

about

Bob Jarvis creates interactive and temporal artworks that integrate music, vision, space, and code. Out of their experimental process emerge eclectic themes of intermodality, colour, polyrhythm, flight, ontology, belief, and kinaesthetics.

Adelaide to Melbourne 18-05-2015 22:53

The piece takes a practical approach the phenomenon of synesthesia and aleatoric music, allowing the moving image to produce a composition with only distant intervention and direction from the composer. Three vertical columns of pixels are analyzed and converted into musical notes for piano, marimba and xylophone, with the brightness of the pixels varying the velocity of the notes.

AILERON ONE

Aileron One is the result of several years of research into dynamic music systems and the musical sonification of human flight. The work explores the use of a sailplane flight path as a structure around which musical form can emerge. The work serves as a point of reflection on the composition of such spatial metacompositions and their potential for enhancing experiences and enabling new modes of…

Andy Warhol's Photobooth @ NGV

Andy Warhol’s Photobooth was an interactive installation I built for The National Gallery of Victory in 2015. Participants would be guided by Sam the cat to throw a series of poses while photos were taken. The images were then processed in the style of Andy Warhol’s Ethel Scull 36 Times . Participants could then share a high resolution image along with an animated video via email. Over 100,000…

Disorganised

For several months throughout 2013 Virtual Proximity AKA James Annelsey , Tristan Courtney and I would hang out in the Melbourne Town Hall devising new ways of using computers to pump vast amounts of air through 3-storey high steel pipes. Fake Food Park @ NGV

I built two interactive applications for Marti Guixe’s Fake Food Park at The National Gallery of Victoria . The first of which was a touch screen drawing application that incorporated face-tracking and animation. Kids were lead through a series of activities including creating their own fruity face, where fruits and vegetables starting with the same letters as their name would attach to their face…

Floating Worlds

Floating Worlds was an interactive piece for children by Melbourne artist Justin Dwyer . I provided a kinetic projection mapping system that allowed recordings of children to be projected onto moving, smoke filled bubbles, tracked by a kinect. The project used TouchDesigner for tracking and projection.

I Am

Created for Gian Slater and her vocal group Invenio, this video accompaniment is animated by the amplitude of 30 discrete channels of audio. The work was created with TouchDesigner, Max, Ableton Live, and was projected onto a piece of marine-grade plywood, before being captured with a Canon DSLR. I often like to recapture digital video like this to introduce some imperfection and warmth.…
