“I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” James Baldwin
The United States of America turns 250 years old today. For many of us, today is complicated because we are holding so many different feelings in tension.
We love the promise that all people are created equal, but we hate how often that promise has been denied to women, Black folks, Indigenous peoples, LGBTQ+ folks, immigrants, disabled people, and the poor.
We love the economic prosperity that exists in America, but we hate the greed and wealth inequality which causes over 14 million children to go to bed hungry every night.
