Zachary Ayotte · Plain Sight

In the summer of 2009, I went to Mexico City with my then partner who was there for a conference. I brought two cameras with me: a Pentax SLR I’d had for years and a small Olympus point-and-shoot I’d purchased at a garage sale. All of the following images were taken with the latter, which I’m not sure I’d ever used prior to this trip. The camera was almost completely manual. It had three focus settings (near, medium, and far), and a bit of translucent plastic around the lens that served as an exposure meter. The shutter made a small, unsatisfying, toy-like click when triggered. I wondered repeatedly if any of the photographs I was taking would turn out. Remarkably, they did.
