This letter is Part 3 of The Foundations - a six-part series based directly on what you told me in the survey. The full set:
1. The clarity problem. Why “I don’t know what to post” is almost never actually a content problem. 2. The consistency myth. Why showing up regularly is a system problem, not a discipline one. 3. The camera question. Why you don’t need to be on camera to establish authority - and what works instead. This post. 4. Sounding like yourself. The most underrated skill in online business. Coming soon. 5. Monetisation that works. Why most online business advice fails people over 40. Coming soon. 6. What to do this week. The 90-day starting plan that ties it all together. Coming soon.
The third thing you told me was getting in the way, in the survey responses I went through, came in different forms but meant the same thing.
“I freeze the moment I try to record anything.” “I’ve started about thirty videos and published zero.” “I know I should be doing reels but I just can’t make myself do it.”
This one is worth unpacking carefully, because the standard advice is almost entirely unhelpful.
The standard advice is: just start. The fear goes away with practice. Everyone hates watching themselves back, everyone sounds strange on recordings, everyone feels awkward at first. Just push through.
That’s not wrong. It’s just not the point.
Because the assumption underneath that advice is that being on camera is the thing standing between you and a growing audience. And I don’t think that’s true.
New here? Welcome to Your Second Act. I’m Susanna - 49, former scientist, and after nine years of starting an online business from nothing (and an audience of 1.6M along the way) I now write specifically for people in their forties, fifties and beyond who suspect they have a second chapter in them. Two letters a week: practical ones on Wednesdays, more personal ones on Sundays. Stick around if any of that sounds like your kind of thing.
If you enjoy free letters like this one, you can upgrade to a paid subscription. You’ll get the practical extras behind every Foundations letter - the templates, scripts and specifics that turn each method into something you can apply this week - plus the monthly Receipts letters where I share what’s actually working in my business: the numbers, the decisions, what I’d do differently. The yearly plan is currently 50% off for a limited time.
The camera question is the wrong question.
The right question isn’t “how do I get comfortable on camera?”
It’s “what format will I actually show up in consistently?”
Because consistency - as we covered last week - only works in a format you’ll actually use. A reluctant, sporadic talking head video will earn less authority than a consistent, well-crafted written post every single time. The format isn’t the strategy. The clarity of your thinking is the strategy. The format is just how you deliver it.
There are more delivery mechanisms than the internet would have you believe.
