Sweat the details

Big on ideas, short on details – talk about “what” but not “how”… that’s not enough. God is in the details, in the little things. And yes, a thousand details add up to one impression.

I’m all in on the details. Everything valuable I’ve accomplished, I sweated the details. Everything I’ve failed at, I missed them.

Sweating the details is not enough; you must focus on the right ones, the details that matter. The big picture hides in these.

I love it when someone highlights a detail that matters. Something I didn’t see. Each time it feels the same: intense and humbling, divine.

How to find your life’s purpose. The eternal question I haven’t yet figured out. This video offers seven angles worth exploring.

Let’s do it.

1. What made me weird as a kid?

   • I was into details. I watched ants – their colony, trails, and organisation. I had obsessions with topics. Planes. Fishes. Guns. Stars. Anything. I dug hard, then jumped onto the next one.

2. When do I lose track of time?

   • I find flow in nature, observation, listening, research, creativity, and connecting with people and ideas.

3. What do people thank me for?

   • Honesty, advice, a different perspective, a laugh.

4. What’s my sentence? – A great person is a sentence.

   • He helped people be happier. I can’t think of anything that would make me feel more valuable… and happy.

5. Where can I make my biggest contribution?

   • On 1:1 interaction and deep listening. Hyperlocally. In the community.

6. What would I do if I didn’t have to make money?

   • Exploration. All kinds of exploration. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.

7. What will I regret when I’m 90?

   • Not starting a business; wasting precious energy on things that don’t matter.

Am I sorted out? No. But these exercises give you hints. Your turn!

I had my first Christmas in July last weekend. Ham, turkey, gifts, and even a Christmas tree. Great concept.

It’s cold here now in Sydney, and Australians know how to find occasions to have fun. They did not invent this, but they are practising it, and it’s all that matters.
