Why doing too much makes you easier to overlook, not harder

You’re the one who always says yes.

The extra project. The awkward task nobody wants. The thing that lands at 5pm and has to be done by morning. You take it, because you’re reliable, because you can, because it feels like the way to be valued.

And you’re being overlooked precisely because of it.

Here’s the mechanism nobody explains. When you absorb everything, you become infrastructure. Useful, load-bearing, and completely invisible, like the plumbing.

Nobody promotes the plumbing. They promote the person they associate with important, visible, valued work, and you’ve buried yours under a mountain of everyone else’s admin.

There’s a second cost, and it’s worse. By always being available to catch whatever falls, you’ve trained everyone that your time is free. And people don’t value free things.

The very availability you offered as generosity gets read as low status, because the senior people in your building are conspicuously not available for everything, and everyone knows it.

Someone I coached, Anna, lived this for years. Colleagues dumped on her because they knew she’d deal with it. When she started protecting her time, something surprising happened. They became more respectful of it, not less. Scarcity signals worth in a way generosity never does.

Here’s the tip. When someone tries to hand you work, make the trade visible. “Happy to help, but I’m on X and Y right now. Which should I put down to fit this in?”

You’re not refusing. You’re making your time have a visible price, and half the requests quietly evaporate, because they were never worth a trade in the first place.

The deeper move is to notice the difference between helpful and load-bearing. Helping occasionally, visibly, on things that matter builds your reputation. Silently absorbing everyone’s overflow erodes it. Learn to feel which one you’re being asked for, and guard your capacity for the first.

This week, say “not without a trade-off” to one piece of invisible work you’d normally have swallowed. Notice the sky doesn’t fall.

Doing enough, and doing the right things visibly, beats doing everything invisibly.

The goal was never to be the person who carries it all. It’s to be the person the room can’t overlook, and you cannot be that while you’re buried under work nobody sees.
