Agentic AI is a class of artificial intelligence that focuses on autonomous systems that can make decisions and perform tasks with limited or no human intervention. Think less “ask and wait” and more “set it and check in later.”

2025 has been explosive for agentic AI. At Microsoft Build in May, the company unveiled tools for “AI agents and building the open agentic web,” with over 230,000 organizations already using Copilot Studio to automate tasks. Gartner predicts 15% of work decisions will be autonomous by 2028, up from zero in 2024, while the market grows from $28 billion in 2024 to $127 billion by 2029.
Y Combinator’s Spring 2025 batch featured 70 agentic AI startups—nearly half the cohort—focusing on everything from web-testing agents to healthcare appeals automation. One standout: Docket, which writes user-aligned tests in plain English, was founded by ex-Citadel and Stripe engineers.
Leaders are bullish. OpenAI’s Sam Altman sees agents as a “multiplier of effort,” handling the “worst parts of your job.” In a recent X post, he noted: “We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents join the workforce and materially change the output of companies.” Meta’s Yann LeCun echoed this, highlighting on-device agents for personalized apps: “On-device, agentic AI assistants enabled by baby Llamas.”
On X, Bindu Reddy, CEO of Abacus.AI, added: “Agents are a stepping stone towards AGI... In 2025 and beyond, Agentic LLMs will have access to thousands of tools and will be able to perform complex tasks with just one prompt.” And Aaron Levie of Box observed: “In just a year, we’ve gone from AI being about answering questions... to AI Agents that can run in the background and do real work.”
Cognition’s Devin, launched in March 2024, acts as an autonomous software engineer—planning, coding, and debugging full apps from natural language prompts. Amazon uses agents in warehouses to forecast demand and negotiate routes, cutting logistics costs. In healthcare, Stanford uses Microsoft’s orchestrator to prep tumor boards, easing admin burdens.
In Africa, adoption is nascent but targeted. RxAll’s deep learning platform authenticates drugs in real-time, combating counterfeits across supply chains—handling verification, compliance, and alerts autonomously. Yemaachi Biotech uses AI agents for genomic analysis tailored to African genetics, speeding cancer diagnostics. Amini deploys satellite-linked agents for climate monitoring, optimizing agricultural yields in data-scarce regions.
For developers, it’s a game-changer: Tools like AWS’s Strands Agents let you build and deploy in lines of code, scaling from simple fixes to production runs. Non-coders benefit too—Salesforce’s Agentforce simulates product launches end-to-end.
Tunisia’s Thunder Code, backed by $9M in 2025 funding, deploys agents for QA testing—simulating human checks to catch UI bugs, slashing dev timelines for African fintechs. Malawi’s Ulangizi chatbot, piloted in 2024, advises farmers on queries via autonomous response generation, boosting yields for smallholders.
Africa’s workforce—young, mobile, and often informal—stands to gain most from agentic AI’s efficiency. McKinsey estimates it could automate 30% of customer ops costs, freeing agents for high-value interactions. In Lagos traffic or Nairobi markets, agents handle inventory tweaks or fraud checks in real-time, letting traders focus on deals.
For developers: Agentic tools like Ng’s reflection patterns mean less debugging drudgery—AI writes tests, spots errors, and iterates. A Kenyan coder might prompt an agent to integrate Yamify’s cloud APIs for a logistics app, getting a working prototype in hours.
