Comrades, sometimes I wish my head was like an empty carpark, perhaps that’s why I’ve taken an interest in photographing them for the last 3 years or so. There’s something quite poetic about an empty parking lot. I’m sure if I try, I can describe it with words, but I’m no poet, that’s why I take pictures instead. I asked GPT for a Haiku and this is what it came up with:

Empty bays hold their breath.
The wind is the only guest.
Silence parks itself.

Most of my personal work is about spaces with no people, but still, the work needs people, not in the photo itself but on the other end. The emptiness isn’t complete until someone else stands in front of it and inhabits it with their own memories. What I find interesting about this is that a photograph is incomplete in its solitude. It’s like a dialogue: the photographer begins the sentence, the subject contributes a few ideas, but it is the viewer who closes the loop.

These empty carparks illustrate this perfectly; to one person they might mean nothing but asphalt and white paint, to someone else a happy memory to where they learned to drive, or their first kiss, or a passionate love affair, or a heartbreak. These photos contain nothing but pleasant aesthetics and peace of mind to me, but now, comrades, it's over to you to close the loop. Enjoy!
