Good morning from the Cobblestone Hotel and Suites in Broken Bow, NE. In an hour or so we will continue out into Colorado and the steady climb towards Denver. There is a warm dampness in the air this morning which is reminiscent of a more tropical set of co-ordinates. I have given up trying to understand how the weather goes during March on this great expanse. “Nebraska is like a half- desert,” Otto said as we looked out of the window with the light faded yesterday evening. I had been feeling weary for the last few days, which is often the case at a certain point on a tour like this. The buoy has been to remember the faces you encounter as you pass through. I have been lucky enough to spend some time speaking with some of you after the shows. In spite of the tumult outside you have come with your hearts and for that I want to thank everyone who has come to a show. It’s a good feeling when we are all together and sharing in something and open to being understood.
Regarding half deserts, I have only ever been to Spain once, to Barcelona in the middle of July, when the city is descended upon by hundreds of thousands of tourists, often from cruise ships alighting from Marseille or Rome, often with many people from this part of the world. I did not enjoy the busyness, I am looking forward to going in Winter. I have been told that the centre of Spain is a great plateau, a sometimes harsh and unforgiving terrain which gives way to desert as you move South. I am looking forward to seeing some of it in November, when I will play both Barcelona and Madrid. I will drive myself across the dewy indigo of the lower Pyrenees and down to see who and what I might see. I hope you will be there.

This run in North America has been close not by design but by circumstance. It’s been a reminder of the charge of taking things away and being in front of people right at the very surface. I will take this reminder with me to Spain. I haven’t been robust enough to follow the news as closely while here, all that’s to say in the small incremental indents available to a person, It feels good to be chiselling on this side of it.
