I was reading about Tangiers yesterday. In this renewed attention surrounding the sovereignty of places. It sounded like a place I’d like to go now, and would have liked to have gone to if I were alive during its time as an international zone. The meeting point of different worlds is always captivating inasmuch as you see in fullness the blending and the blurring at its epicentre, and how the lines we people draw out arbitrarily become just that. The great cities of globalization all have this too if not by geographical but cultural and physical lines in New York, London, Singapore etc.
Athens is another such meeting point. This is a video of the first song on the record from a now dilapidated but formerly grand hotel on Omonia Square. When I started this process I didn’t believe there would be a version of this song, I had never played it before on the piano. I first went to this hotel to see a punk gig and the floors were warping under the weight of the people. The hotel would have been in its heyday one of the proudest in the city. The lines drawn by the people who designed it were still there, but it had been repurposed, the passage of time and different steps taking its toll and becoming something new. This is not an apology for imperialism. It seemed like a good place to try some different versions of pieces of music I had become too acquainted with during the process. I hope you like the song.
It’s coming up to tour now, I am looking forward to being joined by Tommy Barlow for the London gig at Village Underground. Bronwyn sent me Tommy’s music last summer, and it was some of the best music I heard last year. Make sure to come early for the set. I am going to be starting a new tier here. I am grateful to you for spending the time, I like to write to you. Thank you.
