Historical Roundtable – Special Edition

Tunisia holds a profound place in the history of the Second World War. Between late 1942 and May 1943, the country became the stage for a decisive military campaign that would shape the future of North Africa and open the road to the Allied invasion of Sicily and the liberation of Western Europe.

To commemorate this important historical moment, we are pleased to announce a special edition of the Historical Roundtable, dedicated to the end of the Tunisian Campaign. This gathering will bring together history enthusiasts, researchers, and contributors interested in preserving the memory of Tunisia’s wartime past.

The Tunisian Campaign unfolded over six intense months of fighting across the country. From Medenine and the Mareth Line to Kasserine, Medjez el Bab, Tunis, and Bizerte, Tunisia witnessed some of the most significant military operations of the North African theater. These battles were marked by strategic movements, fierce resistance, and major turning points that ultimately led to the surrender of Axis forces on 13 May 1943.

That surrender represented far more than the end of a military campaign. It marked the collapse of Axis control in North Africa and created the conditions for the next stage of the Allied advance. In this sense, the Tunisian Campaign stands as one of the most consequential episodes of World War II, both for the region and for the broader course of the conflict.

This special roundtable will revisit the final days of the campaign, the liberation of Tunis and Bizerte, and the military developments that brought the Axis presence in Tunisia to an end. It will also offer space to reflect on the campaign’s impact on the Tunisian population, the physical landscape of the country, and the memory of the war that remains present today through photographs, documents, and surviving traces of the conflict.

More than a simple lecture or commemorative event, the roundtable is designed as a space for exchange and collective memory. Participants will have the opportunity to share research, documents, stories, and visual materials related to this critical period. By bringing together different perspectives and sources, the event aims to deepen understanding of Tunisia’s role in the Second World War and to encourage dialogue around the importance of historical preservation.
