“Creative Reminder: There are seasons for making the thing and seasons for becoming the person who can make the thing.”

—Kate Van Horn

It’s been a long while since I’ve written a new poem. I have been scribbling words on the page, but nothing has made its way out of my notebook.

I have been sitting with, working with, asking questions of the below poem for the last couple of days, and it tells me it’s ready to be shared.

I suspect that the above quote by Kate Van Horn has something to do with this poem emerging.

It seems the moment I gave myself permission not to need to make a thing, a thing got made.

So, here it is.

The messy human in me bows to the messy human in you,

Should I stay silent until
I find words good enough,
true enough?
Or, should I begin here
with the crickets steeping
the evening with song—
a song no one asked for.
Oh, how their chorus quiets
the chirp chirp chirping
in me.
Six-legged ones
making music
with their own wings.
Have they ever once wondered
if the moment
is worthy of song?

There is currently just 1 open spot in my upcoming six week Write Yourself Free series.

If you don’t grab that last spot & would like to be added to the waitlist, please reply to this email (or email me at writeyourselffree@gmail.com).

This will be a time of no editing, no critiquing, no performance—no need to hide your messy humanness—just real connection, real truth telling.

I very much need this kind of real right now, maybe you do too?

Julia brings a beauty and an acceptance that is utterly heartwarming, tender, and kind of like the comfiest couch you can ever imagine.
