Friendship at 50: Who's Still in the Group Chat?

Four Seasons Movie (1981)

We’d used to gather in packs, five, sometimes seven at a time.

We’d gather around someone’s kitchen island, drinking wine in mismatched glasses, snacking from bowls pulled straight from the dishwasher, talking over each other or quietly paired. We knew each other’s coffee orders, kids’ middle names, and Target runs’ schedule.

Now? The calendar is wide open, and the group text is quiet.
The invites and texts stopped circulating. I’ve stopped sending them, too. But I’m not sure which came first.

One of us moved across the country (which is a given for military spouses), and another has turned inward. One quietly faded during the pandemic. We didn’t break up. We just… didn’t hold on.

This hurts more than it used to. These were the people who knew me in real-time before the kids could drive, before my marriage had gray in it, and before we got better at hiding the hard stuff.

Back in our twenties, friendships were fast and sticky, bonded by roommates, boyfriends, and shared experiences. In our thirties, we connected over toddlers, work gripes, and survival. But in our fifties, friendships aren’t forged by proximity or chaos. They’re chosen.

And that choosing? That’s where it gets tricky. It was easier when school, marriage, children, or work put them in your path. Friendships made easy thanks to your life’s station.

Lately, everyone’s on a different timeline. Some are sandwiched between aging parents and kids in high school. Others are remarried or starting over. Someone is retired or is enjoying a job promotion while I’m just trying to finish a book and keep the dog from peeing on the rug for the 4th time this week.

The biggest hurdle? Silence doesn’t feel neutral anymore. Back then, a lull in conversation was usually a small interruption. Now, when messages go unanswered or a birthday passes without a call, it feels personal. Our expectations have matured, but so have our sensitivities. Maybe we feel more fragile or don’t give a (&%^*). And so much at this age is learning to let go…not of the friendships, necessarily. But to let go of the ego and expectations gracefully and honestly.

So, who’s still in the group chat?

Fewer people than before.
But the ones still there?
They don’t need reminding. They just show up.

And for now, that’s enough.
