Review: Unicorn Overlord

There are games in the world that feel too good for you to play, it’s a silly notion, like a game is too clever or high brow for a lowly gamer such as you. It’s daft but that’s often how I feel about Ogre Battle, the role-playing/real time strategy hybrid that would eventually lead to Continue reading "Review: Unicorn Overlord"

Thoughts on a bunch of NeoGeo arcade games vol. 1

So if you listen to, or see the posting about, my awful Audio Only Let’s Play series you might see I’ve been playing short bursts of many NeoGeo games. For now this is just going to be the arcade titles, in the vague chronological order according to a list on Wikipedia. You might be able Continue reading "Thoughts on a bunch of NeoGeo arcade games vol. 1"

A loose review: Skies of Arcadia

A lot of the time when I write about games I’ve been playing I don’t feel like I can really add to the conversation. This is a game that is critically acclaimed with good reason, and despite the fact I’ve spent nearly fifty hours with it I have startlingly little new to say. It’s a Continue reading "A loose review: Skies of Arcadia"

Vandal Hearts Review

Some reviews can be meticulously written ahead of time and some you kind of have to do off the top of your head. This is one of the latter. Vandal Hearts can feel like its derivative of Tactics Orge and Final Fantasy Tactics, although it is a parallel production. It doesn’t have the kind of Continue reading "Vandal Hearts Review"

Star Ocean: Second Story review

It was a game of two halves, the cliché of the post sports interview brought to life in a JRPG. Star Ocean’s foray onto the PlayStation is a strange and engrossing experience. A beautiful game with a stop-start plot and combat that is satisfying yet utterly obscure in terms of how success or failure is Continue reading "Star Ocean: Second Story review"

Tasting the Nespresso Vertuo Christmas flavours

So for clarity I do drink my coffee unadorned, which might not be ideal for these particular coffees. Peanut and Sesame: I made it to the second sip. I understand it in a way that I really don’t understand it. Almond Croissant: I instantly had to spit this out. Utterly disgusting, much like the pastry Continue reading "Tasting the Nespresso Vertuo Christmas flavours"

Brief reviews of brief games I’ve played recently

Battle Arena Toshinden 3 it’s honestly a nice feeling game let down by it’s art direction being at odds with the graphical styles of the early PlayStation library. By no means a true 3D fighter but it’s quite fine for the nippy fast paced fighting that is done better by Bloody Roar 2. Soul Blade/Calibur Continue reading "Brief reviews of brief games I’ve played recently"

Megaman Legends

So there are times when a game gets by on charm alone and there are times when a game gets by on its gameplay and design. Mega Man Legends is one that manages both very very well. It couples are fairly solid 3D platform map of the 1997 variety with dungeon exploration and a story, Continue reading "Megaman Legends"

rambling reviews: Earthbound and Katamari

Earthbound: You can see why the meme is that all indie games are either cave story or Earthbound. Earthbound represents the mindset of taking old at the time gameplay forms and using them in an actual artistic fashion. On paper this game is Dragon Quest in a contemporary setting, what it ends up doing is Continue reading "rambling reviews: Earthbound and Katamari"

Legend of Dragoon part 3 – how do you feminise your voice anyway?.m4a – SoundCloud

Listen to Legend of Dragoon part 3 – how do you feminise your voice anyway?.m4a by Michael Benedict Colman on #SoundCloud https://on.soundcloud.com/JYXFg So like… An hour and a half of a tiny snippet of this game. A lot of naff voices, for example settling on Dart being a slightly more deadpan version of myself when Continue reading "Legend of Dragoon part 3 – how do you feminise your voice…
