Helaas is er weer een incident tussen de Filipijnen en China in de Zuid-Chinese Zee. De Filipijnse marine zou zijn geslagen met houten stokken door de Chinese kustwacht in de buurt van het door Manila gestrande schip op Second Thomas Shoal. Peking beschuldigt de Filipijnse marine ervan met zijn rubberen bootjes de duidelijk grotere boten van de Chinese kustwacht te hebben geramd. De landen hebben elkaars ambassadeurs op het matje geroepen.

Daarnaast had Japan klachten over een gezamenlijk Russisch-Chinese marine-oefening, volgens Tokio in de Japanse EEZ. Marineschepen van beide landen schoten met scherp zo’n 180km ten zuidwesten van Okinotori, het meest zuidelijke ‘eiland’ van Japan. Okinotori is een atol die volgens Japans buurlanden op basis van hoe klein het is onder UNCLOS geen recht heeft op een EEZ. Peking en Moskou hebben dus duidelijk gekozen om de Japanse claim uit te dagen – in de boze Chinese reacties op de Japanse verklaring n.a.v. tien jaar uitspraak Zuid-Chinese Zee wees Peking al op Okinotori als voorbeeld van Japans hypocrisie.
