De economische statistieken uit China voor de maand juli vallen weer tegen. De officiële cijfers waren lager dan voorspeld. Let wel op: er is nog altijd geen krimp (volgens de officiële cijfers). Wel komt retail met 0,6% groei wel erg dicht in de buurt van nominale deflatie. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat in reële cijfers de deflatie al in sommige cijfers sluipt. Op de huizenmarkt dalen de prijzen ook nog altijd – en dat is een groot probleem in een land waar zoveel huishoudens hun spaargeld in bakstenen gestopt hebben.

Uit Duitsland en Spanje komen ook interessante economische cijfers. Het banenverlies in de autoindustrie gaat nog altijd door. Dat is nog niet afgelopen. In de nieuwe realiteit zijn het de Duitse fabrieken waar veel overcapaciteit is – nu er minder vraag is naar brandstofauto’s in het algemeen en Duitse auto’s specifiek. Uit Spanje komt een stuk over toegenomen vraag naar Chinese hybrides. Dat zal de Duitse problemen verergeren.

Onder Amerikaanse buitenlandexperts is er veel onrust over een vriendelijke tweet van Donald Trump over de Noord-Koreaanse dictator Kim Jung Un. Trump heeft de opdracht gegeven om een militaire oefening met Zuid-Korea af te schalen. Dat komt bovenop nieuws dat het altijd in Azië aanwezige vliegkampschip nu richting Iran gedirigeerd wordt. Onderzoek laat ook zien, dat er minder Amerikaanse marineschepen door de Straat van Taiwan varen sinds Trump terug is. Stimulans voor de Chinese hoop op een nieuwe ‘strategische stabiliteit’ dankzij consolidatie van de Amerikaanse positie in Azië.
