You know the feeling in your stomach when your favorite chisel decides to take a nosedive onto the concrete floor. We've all been there—that sickening thunk and the dread that follows as you inspect the poor thing. A mangled edge, a chipped point – it's enough to make any woodworker sigh. But fear not, there's life after a drop!
Spoon carving is an art as old as stone tools. Carving a spoon can be a meditative job that allows you to take a block of wood and end up with a piece of art that is also a functional kitchen utensil. This spoon is made from walnut and can be made in just a couple hours with basic tools.
Making a Try Square is an incredibly simple project, even though it requires a high amount of precision. When first starting off in woodworking, often, some of the best projects are tools for your own shop. A Try Square is one of the simplest tools that can be used for the rest of your life. Along the way, we will learn how to make a bridle joint and how to adjust the Try Square as it will move…
When starting out in woodworking, most people are looking for a cheap source of lumber. Firewood is actually a fantastic source of lumber as it is riven and that will provide a much more stable piece of wood. A lot of the projects that people will work on are small enough to come out of a piece of firewood.
A bird feeder, what better present to make for Mother's Day with the kids. This is a simple project that can be made in an afternoon with the kids helping out and learning about different tools in the shop. With a very basic set of chisel, hand plane, drill and saw anyone can make a bird feeder. Not only will mom love something that the kids made, but the kids will have a good time in the shop and…
What is the best Wood glue? This wasn't the question that started this test off, but it soon became the goal of the whole test. Initially, I just wanted to know is there any benefit to using dry High glue over one of the liquid choices? but since I'm already doing a glue test I might as well throw in a couple of the PVAs and see how those do, and in that case I might as well test epoxy, and the…
I was asked by a friend to make coasters sometime ago on the channel and figured this would be a good opportunity. I don't like making coasters that have to go into a little box as the box itself serves little point other than holding the coasters and that seems counterproductive. I wanted to make some coasters that would hold themselves together but still look like just a stack of coasters.
Casein glue is glue made from the protein in milk. It is a very simple and quick glue to make and because it comes from milk it is non-toxic, safe and fun for kids in projects and woodworking.
my daughter (7 years old) made a tool box with all hand tools including the carving on the front in red oak. This was a great woodworking project to do with kids and teach about tools and how to use them. it includes how to use a hand saw, Howto use a Brace and bit, How-to use a hand plane and other hand tool skills.if a 7-year-old can carve and build this tool box so can you and your kid!
Whether you call it a Bowtie, a Butterfly or a dutchman (or many other names) it still does the same work to stabilize a crack in the woodwork or just to look good. this is a simple task that a lot of op people over think and it can take far less time than you think.
A router plane is an easy tool to make, and it was one of the first that I made. In this video, I go over how to make a router plane out of some scrap Cherry and some Eye Bolts. This is a quick Hand tool Woodworking project that most anyone can do, and the results can change a shop! With little more than a Brace, Bit and Chisel you can make one too.
A photographer friend of mine asked me to make one of these for her photo studio. It is a bit different from what I normally like to do, and as much as I dislike panted finishes I an mot a man to turn away a challenge. I learned a few things along the way and hope to share those with you here.
The layout square is the predecessor to the carpenter's square as we know it today and this simple design goes back pre-history. They are found in every culture and time. Almost all are built the same way just different decorations and sizes to match the culture and use. We decided to make this out of maple and walnut as it is a bit cliche, but still a strong contrast! This can be built in a long…
https://youtu.be/-yo9z73_pu0 I recently made a joiner's mallet, but it has a hard face and can ding up work easily. I needed a mallet for finishing with a leather face and softer head. Much of this build is just like the last one with more carving and leather. Also, rather than building it out of firewood, I am using a scrap of cherry that was perfect for this build. One can never have enough…
https://youtu.be/JYDe_FvmYkk Dovetails can be complex, but they do not need to be. This is the simplest and easiest way I know to hand cut a dovetail joint. As hand tool woodworking skills go, this one is very easy once you master a few basic skills. Also, there are thousands of ways to do it. This is just one method that does not require much thought or a pile of jigs. Tools needed Square:…
