In early March, I traveled to Minnesota to cover ICE’s occupation of the Twin Cities and the widespread local mobilizations to resist them.

Just over two weeks earlier, following the death of Alex Pretti and Renée Good, the Trump administration had fired “commander” Greg Bovino and announced a withdrawal of a large portion of ICE agents stationed in the state. The change in policy was celebrated as a tactical victory by Minnesota residents, but not the complete cessation of all ICE presence that many demanded.

I discovered in the course of my reporting a region still reeling from the months long terror campaign. The trauma was acute. Everyone I spoke to was directly affected by the violence or knew someone who was. Many had taken serious personal risk to observe and track ICE activity with the aims of protecting their neighbours.
