Republicans in Congress and many corporations support Trump. And Trump has a disgusting 35% approval rating in polls. The rating means about 60 million people, who are registered Republican voters, approve of Trump despite the blatant corruption and violations of law, the lying, the attacks on democracy and elections, the lack of affordability the ICE raids on immigrants including the murders of American citizens and the war with Iran. Of course, the 60 million includes MAGA with white male supremacists who hate women, blacks and immigrants. But there is a deeper explanation of Trump support.
Trump’s war and tariffs operate in a lawless, fascist autocracy which is a totalitarian cult run by Trump supported by the rejection of factual reality. MAGA voters are suffering but reject the factual reality of harmful affordability and still support Trump. Why?
The rejection of truth and reality or even the existence of a factual reality by MAGA Republicans is enforced by the fear of being hated and ostracized by their MAGA neighbors, family and friends and even being arrested and prosecuted if they disagree or even question what is said or done in Trump’s totalitarian cult. MAGA Republicans include Republicans in Congress, and the 60 million MAGA supporters who approve of almost everything Trump says and does. Safety exists in compliance and being an enthusiastic member of the cult as are corporations and billionaire oligarchs.
For other non-MAGA Republican citizens, compliance and rejection of reality is enforced with death threats and actual violence. ICE and MAGA violence are key parts of the totalitarianism to force compliance and suppress dissent or rational thinking.
In a recent post, Krugman explains why he thinks MAGA Republican voters support Trump which requires rejection of reality and acceptance of Trump’s lying. The lying includes false stupid statements like Reality is a Communist Plot.
Krugman correctly believes MAGA thinking that rejects truth and the reality or even the existence of factual evidence and science is trapped in a totalitarian mindset. Krugman also says other factors contribute such as “confluence of big-money corruption, crony capitalism, religious fanaticism, and the ever-present forces of racism and sexism.”
In a recent post, Reich explains other good reasons why many corporations support Trump even though Trump’s policies and actions such as war and tariffs which greatly harm consumers.
