I love watching people arrive in Costa Rica for the very first time. Some are in their forties. Others are in their sixties. I’ve met adventurous souls in their seventies and even eighties who finally decided, “If not now... when?” You know what I have discovered after helping people make the move for more than twenty years? The rainforest doesn’t really care how old you are.
It doesn’t ask for your birth certificate before it lets you enjoy a breathtaking sunrise over the Pacific Ocean. The toucans don’t quiz you about your retirement account. The monkeys couldn’t care less how many birthdays you’ve celebrated. They’re far more interested in entertaining you while stealing a mango from someone’s backyard or putting on a comedy show in the treetops.
Costa Rica has a remarkable way of reminding us that life isn’t measured by the number of candles on a birthday cake. It’s measured by the number of mornings you wake up excited about what’s ahead. I’ve watched people reinvent themselves here in the most inspiring ways. Former executives become coffee farmers. Teachers become artists. Accountants become tour guides. Grandparents suddenly find themselves hiking to waterfalls, learning Spanish, trying new foods, and making lifelong friends from every corner of the world.
Of course, moving to another country takes courage. There will be paperwork. There will be unfamiliar customs. There will be moments when you’ll wonder why the grocery store has seventeen varieties of plantains but not your favorite breakfast cereal. You’ll laugh at yourself more than once—and that’s all part of the adventure.
The biggest obstacle usually isn’t age. It’s fear. Fear whispers, “Maybe I’m too old.” Costa Rica simply smiles and replies, “Nonsense.”
Every single day offers another opportunity to begin again. The rainforest has been welcoming newcomers for thousands of years. It has watched generations come and go, and somehow it always seems to say the very same thing: “Come on in. The adventure isn’t over yet.”
So whether you’re 45, 65, or 85, remember this: it’s never too late to trade a little stress for a little Pura Vida. In fact, the very best chapter of your life may be waiting directly under that thick rainforest canopy.
