By the time I arrived in Slope County, just in time for sixth grade, my siblings and I had acquired a fairly impressive collection of 45 records, purchased one by one at the El Paso K-Mart. So when I learned that there was going to be a dance party in the school lunchroom, I showed up with my little blue container of 45 records. One of which was Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Davi-da.” I don’t remember who I danced with, but of course I do remember that it was all awkward in the way of all 6th grade dances in cafeterias worldwide. Why is this on my mind? Because when I was driving today and listening to the Sixties station, the song came on, right after “Crimson and Clover”, over and over.

Since those by-gone days, I have listened to music not only from the Sixties. Like this one about butterflies.
But in college, I listened to Heart and Meat Loaf (well, although I never owned an album by him, some of the girls in the dorm played Meat Loaf incessantly) and CSNY and Jackson Browne and Emmylou Harris and Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez and James Taylor and Carly Simon and B.B. King and Linda Ronstadt…. I guess you could say my taste in music was and is eclectic. Confession: while I can play classical music on my piano, I don’t much like to listen to it anymore and I like gospel and country and rock and bluegrass, but not so much disco (if you had worked in a record story during the disco era you might feel the same way). I worked hard for the money. And if you have read my essays you know I do not like: Bee Gees (disco-y) and Billy Joel (burnout). Somehow I missed the whole “hairball” era of music and I’m okay with that. Oddly enough I listened to Edith Piaf when my twins were babies (anything to escape from Jeopardy and the boredom of….you fill in the blanks here).
Back to butterflies.
What’s not to like about butterflies?
I still think Joni Mitchell is a treasure.
