There have been times when I’m in the middle of a conversation and the verbal flow suddenly stops. I can see the shape of the word I need, feel everything around it, but I can’t locate the actual word itself. Other times I pick up my phone intending to cancel a subscription and half an hour later I’ve checked Facebook, scrolled email, looked to see if any of the creators I follow have posted, and somehow started reading about the mating habits of stag horn beetles.
Age, menopause, cannabis, MS—take your pick. When those lapses start showing up more often, that’s my cue to tighten up with cognitive supplements. I could try to isolate the exact cause and fix it at the root, but my dance card is already full with those kinds of projects. So I choose supplements.
I rotate two: Luminous Mind (Adapt Naturals) and Just Thrive Focus & Memory. Thirty days on one, then I switch. I’m not repping either product. No endorsement deals, no affiliate programs, no incentives. I just like them both for different reasons.
When I’m on the Just Thrive round I stop my regular vitamin D because it already contains a solid dose. It also has a small amount of caffeine that Luminous Mind does not. I notice the missing caffeine when I’m on a Luminous stretch—it’s the one thing I miss.
Luminous Mind (2 capsules)
Bacopa monnieri (Bacognize®) – 300 mg
Lion’s Mane mushroom (fruiting body) – 200 mg
Uridine 5’-monophosphate – 150 mg
Alpinia galanga (enXtra®) – 150 mg
Citicoline (Cognizin®) – 125 mg
Ginkgo biloba leaf extract – 125 mg
Phosphatidylserine – 100 mg
No caffeine. No vitamin D.
Just Thrive Focus & Memory (2 gummies or equivalent capsule serving)
Lion’s Mane – 500 mg
KSM-66® Ashwagandha – 300 mg
Citicoline – 250 mg
CognatiQ® (coffee fruit extract) – 100 mg
Vitamin D3 – 5,000 IU
Caffeine – ~40 mg
Vitamin B12 – 12 mcg
Shared ingredients
Both formulas include Lion’s Mane and Citicoline. Lion’s Mane is one of the few mushrooms with decent human data on nerve growth factor support and mild cognitive benefits. Citicoline (especially the Cognizin form in Luminous Mind) is a well-studied choline source that supports acetylcholine production and membrane repair. Higher dose in the Just Thrive product.
Luminous Mind’s unique strengths
Bacopa (Bacognize®) at a full clinical dose is the memory workhorse here. Most studies showing benefits for memory retention used 300 mg of a standardized extract.
Uridine + Citicoline together support phospholipid synthesis and synaptic plasticity—more of a “build and repair” approach than pure stimulation.
enXtra® Alpinia galanga is interesting. It’s one of the few non-caffeine ingredients shown to improve alertness within an hour without the classic stimulant side effects.
Ginkgo + Phosphatidylserine round it out with circulation and membrane support. This formula feels more structural and long-game to me.
Just Thrive’s unique strengths
The 5,000 IU of D3 is convenient if you’re not already supplementing vitamin D (or if your levels tend to run low).
CognatiQ® (coffee fruit extract) has data on increasing BDNF and improving working memory and attention. It’s not the same as caffeine, even though it comes from the coffee plant.
KSM-66 Ashwagandha at 300 mg is a solid stress-buffering dose. Useful when cognitive issues feel tied to cortisol or mental fatigue.
The small amount of caffeine (~40 mg) is enough to notice but low enough that it doesn’t feel like a pre-workout. That’s the piece I miss on Luminous rounds.
On Lion’s Mane and MS
Both formulas contain Lion’s Mane, which is one of the main reasons I keep rotating them. The mushroom contains compounds (hericenones and erinacines) that stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF). Preclinical work has shown that extracts can push oligodendrocyte precursor cells toward mature, myelin-producing cells and increase myelin basic protein. In animal models of demyelination (the cuprizone model that mimics some aspects of MS), Lion’s Mane has reduced myelin loss and limited some of the inflammatory response.
I don’t stack them. I run one for a full month, then switch. The rotation keeps me from adapting too hard to either formula and lets me notice the differences. Luminous Mind feels cleaner and more steady over the long haul. Just Thrive gives a little more immediate lift and covers my vitamin D at the same time.
Neither is magic. They don’t fix the underlying reasons the word retrieval stalls or the phone rabbit holes happen. They just make those episodes less frequent and less severe while I keep working on the bigger picture (sleep, protein, movement, stress load, and the rest of the MS toolkit).
If you’re dealing with similar cognitive static, the honest answer is that both of these are reasonable options depending on whether you want the caffeine + D3 or the more classic nootropic stack without stimulants. I’m still rotating them because both earn their place.
