Sitting in the Dark With My Soul

I have been hesitant to write this post because it seems out of place the week after a new moon. We are supposed to be manifesting, right? Setting intentions?

I have said many times I am not an astrologer, but I like to keep up with what is happening in the planets and stars. I try not to let it affect what I am receiving from Spirit. Sometimes the messages that come to me from Spirit fit with the astrology, and sometimes not so much.

This past Sunday, my monthly spiritual gathering coincided with what we normally call the ‘new’ moon. Technically, there is no visible moon. My logical mind wants to think it is not ‘new’ until that first little sliver shows up in the sky a day or two later. But those of you who are astrologers probably have an answer for that.

I was asking my Angels and Guides if the theme for the gathering on Sunday would fit with the symbolism of the new moon. I was thinking, let’s write out our intentions and do some sort of ritual.

But I got a totally different response from my Spirit Team.

I heard, Sit in the dark with your soul.

I created a meditation for my group where we took a guided meditation to our soul’s temple. Inside our soul’s temple are many different rooms, each one with a focus, but this time we entered an empty room with no lights, no windows, and complete darkness. The goal was to sit in the dark, with no agenda, no list of intentions, no questions or desires or requests. Just sit with our soul. We could take our guardian Angel or a favorite Guide with us, especially if we have some preconceived notions about ‘the dark,’ but allow ourselves to sit in the void and just see what came up.

The Guides explained that many of us who are spiritual tend to be a bit apprehensive of ‘the dark,’ because of the tendency to associate the dark with evil. But they said, the dark was not necessarily evil.

The dark is the absence of Light. But evil is the absence of Love. And the two are very different.

We think of the Light as the Divine. I am used to calling in the frequencies of Divine Love and Light together, as if they are conjoined twins, inseparable in some way. But Divine Love and Divine Light have two very different frequencies.

Divine Light is knowledge. It is the essence of consciousness itself. When we say that we had a sudden idea or inspiring thought, we often say, I saw the light, or a light bulb lit up inside my head. We are saying that we had a connection to a consciousness, or a knowledge, that seemed greater than our own individual consciousness.

Divine Love is more of a feeling. No words really. Divine Light is full of words, pictures, ideas, and a sense of knowing, but Divine Love is how that makes you feel. It is how you feel when you are around people who you care about, yes, but bigger than that. It is how the Universe feels about you. About all of creation.

The Guides said that ‘the dark’ was not the absence of Love. It was the absence of Light. Of knowledge. And sometimes it is okay to sit in the dark with the unknown and be completely okay with not knowing.

The dark is the place where seeds are planted. A baby lives in the complete and total darkness of the womb for nine months prior to arriving to Earth life. When we plant seeds in our garden, we dig a hole and plant them inside the Earth. We cover them with dirt. They live in the dark for however long is necessary to begin to evolve into what they were meant to become.

Somewhere inside that seed is the blueprint for what that seed would eventually become, but I wonder, does the consciousness of the seed see itself as a green bean, or a sunflower, or whatever kind of seed it is? Or does it sit in the dark and allow that vision to grow from somewhere deep inside?

Sitting in the dark with your soul is an exercise in surrender.

No agenda.

No questions.

No requests.

Complete lack of knowledge.

It is being okay with not knowing what is going to happen.

It is not having to figure out a plan or a route that is going to get you to where you want to be.

It is not knowing where you want to be. Or who you want to be. Or who you want to be with. Or even what your next step is.

Last week, I had a bit of a strange experience. I guess it was Friday.

I was sitting on my front porch drinking my tea, as I do almost every morning, weather permitting. As I sat there, a cardinal flew very close to me and landed directly in front of me on my porch banister. He sat there for a moment and seemed to look at me. Then he flew away.

Later that day my husband and I went to see the new Steven Spielberg movie, Disclosure Day. In the movie, a cardinal flies into the main character’s house, lands directly in front of her, and looks her in the eye, then flies away.

Okay. That was weird.

I didn’t really understand the significance until yesterday when I was seeing a client and she was wondering what to do. I remembered that the character in the movie seemed to be led to get in her car and drive without knowing where she was going. She just knew to drive north. At some point she shifted directions and ended up where she was supposed to be, without any knowledge beforehand where she was headed. But she knew when she got there.

Right now it seems we are living in a weird timeline. We don’t know where we are going. We want to know, what am I supposed to be doing? Where am I supposed to be and who am I supposed to be with when I am doing it or going there?

Everything we have been doing works sometimes, and sometimes it doesn’t. Something feels off.

Maybe we just need to get in our (symbolic) car, and sit still until we hear, Drive north.

When we get to the road we are supposed to turn left on, we will know it when we see it.

Sometimes sitting in the dark with your soul may feel uncomfortable. You may think you should be doing something. Breathe in Divine Love. Breathe out. Repeat.

We may have to sit in the dark more than five minutes. We may have to do it more than once. Eventually something inside will shift and we will get up and move forward.

We may not know where we will end up or why we are headed in the direction we are being led to travel. But when we get there, something will click inside and we will know.

Do you wonder what happened when I led my group in the meditation to sit in the dark? There were tears. Some felt and saw nothing. Some never got to the dark room, they ended up somewhere else completely.

Each of us had the experience we needed at that moment.

These times we live in are calling us to a different way of living. Some days we know exactly where we are going and what we are doing and some days we have no clue. Some days we may feel like we are in a dark room with no windows and some days we may feel the sun shining down on us and we know that all is right with the world.

I invite you to take some time this week to sit with your soul. If you are uncomfortable sitting in the dark, that part isn’t completely necessary. In this case, the dark is not necessarily physical.

Remember, sitting in the dark is sitting in the experience of not knowing.

Maybe you will receive direction and maybe you won’t.

Be here. All we have is right now.

Love. Breathe. Be kind.

Anchor in Divine Love wherever you are.

Today is all we have.
