The Full Moon in Aquarius: The Magic of the Wort Moon

Hello witches, pagans, and moon lovers!

Welcome to another full moon breakdown, where we look at what the July Full Moon in Aquarius has to offer us. It arrives on Wednesday 29th July.

There are numerous names for this full moon, one of which is Buck Moon. However, as this is a Native American name and I live in Europe, I’d rather use a name more appropriate for the area. A quick search for other names suggested:

• Hay Moon, for obvious reasons

• Grain Moon, because although more associated with August, here in southern Europe grain harvests are earlier, plus we’re close to Lughnasadh/ Lammas that celebrates the first harvest

• Herb Moon, because many herbs are harvested now, and modern witches associate this time for making herb bundles and creating tinctures and oils from mugwort, St John’s Wort, lavender, rosemary, yarrow, thyme, and sage. Or Wort Moon, the old English/Anglo-Saxon name for herbs. “Wort” simply means herb or medicinal plant.

I decided upon Wort Moon, which because it’s so close to Lughnasadh carries the themes of:

• The first harvest

• Gratitude for abundance

• Honouring the land

• Sharing food and community

• Blessing tools, crafts and skills

Lugh himself was a god not only of the harvest but of mastery, craftsmanship, poetry, and many arts, making this an inspiring moon for creatives as well as gardeners. So, let’s look at this full moon’s themes.

Talking of Lughnasadh, here’s my guide:

Aquarius is the visionary of the zodiac—a sign of freedom, originality, and awakening. It invites us to break old patterns, honour our true selves, and remember that our greatest magic often lies in what makes us different. Under an Aquarius Moon, intuition meets inspiration, opening the door to new perspectives and possibilities.

Kirsty Gallagher in Lunar Living calls this a “rebellious freedom-seeking moon that helps you find your greatest vision and purpose”. Wow! That is quite the statement! She encourages deep trust in yourself and signs that appear to guide you, as well as listening and acting upon your inner voice that encourages freedom of self-expression.
