Congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks, who beat the New England Patriots, 29–13. Those of us in Steelers country were officially, definitely neutral on the matter. (Go Hawks!)
But Seattle wasn’t the only winner of Super Bowl LX. Kenneth Walker III may have been named MVP — deservedly so — but the spotlight also shone on another star: Fred Rogers.
Nearly 130 million people were (re)introduced to Fred last night via two classic songs: “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” and “You Are Special.”
Here’s Lady Gaga’s rendition of “Won’t You Be My Neighbor,” a song Fred wrote in 1967 and sang hundreds of times in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood:
Lady Gaga’s cover appeared in this ad, which The New York Times ranked among the evening’s best. “Mister Rogers was so clearly someone that stood for something,” says Gaga. “And it is powerful to think of what he would say right now, and it’s a special song to revisit at this time.”
As if Lady Gaga’s beautiful rendition weren’t enough, the NFL honored Fred in another ad, this time with “You Are Special”:
It was a beautiful night in the neighborhood — and a reminder, yet again, of how much Mister Rogers still matters.
