YAY!
I’ve been teasing a secret project for a few months now that I called “Project 38.” Well, DC Comics just revealed the details today! I’m writing and drawing a 6 issue series for DC Black Label called SUPERMAN: THE STRANGER. It’s Superman boiled down to the basics. Here’s my quote from the DC website that pretty much sums it up:
“Superman is my favorite hero. Always has been. I grew up on Christopher Reeve and John Byrne’s interpretation, then his animated adventures and All-Star Superman as I grew older. His mythology always changing with the times. But the version I love the most and the one that I think, strangely, reflects our modern world best, is the ORIGINAL.
You strip away the extra powers, you strip away Ma and Pa Kent, and Smallville and Krypton, you boil it down to that explosive first issue of Action Comics, and you have this vital, powerful myth of a brash young man with incredible powers fighting against a corrupt city. That’s the story I want to tell.”
It’s six issues, 24 pages each. The story is outside the regular DC continuity like all the Black Label books, and it’s set in 1938 when Action Comics #1 first hit the stands. I’m also leaning hard into the Art Deco-style of the era and the look of the classic Fleischer Studios Superman Cartoons. It’s a different approach from what I’ve been doing on Kaya or what I did on Deadly Class. Here’s a preview:
And I got to bring along my collaborators on Kaya, colonist Jason Wordie and letterer Tom Napolitano. They’re both doing incredible work as always. It’s coming in September, so let your comic shop know you want it on your pull-list today.

Man, I love me some secrets! So I’ve got a new one for ya! I’m calling this one “Project Atomic.” All I can say right now is I’m working with a major publisher on reimagining a character you all know and love. I’m not drawing this one, but we’re looking at some straight-up artistic juggernauts to help me bring it to life. Very exciting! That should be revealed some time in the fall.
Yep- I’ve been writing and drawing The Stranger at the same time as Kaya. So our favorite little warrior’s been a little slow to come out over the past few months. That kind of drives me crazy. I take pride in being on time, but it really couldn’t be helped. I had the opportunity to do a Superman story I’ve been dreaming of for years, and there was no guarantee that offer would still be there when I wrap up Kaya’s adventures, y’know? So I had to make it work. But now I’m finishing art on the fifth issue of The Stranger, so I’m almost there. Kaya will get back to a regular schedule by the end of the summer.
I’m looking forward to it because working on Superman, getting to tell his story my way, has been a life long dream. A major check off the bucket list. But taking on this much work is burning me out, man! Kirby did it for decades! But alas, I am not Kirby. I am only Wes. And Wes needs a nap.

And we also introduce a new adversary named Fenris who embodies the DARK side of the love generation.
