A Montana gunman killed eight relatives, shot himself after police arrived, and later died at a hospital. Men perpetrated 91 percent of 408 homicide-suicides. The Trump administration exploits that overwhelmingly male pattern with grievance, testosterone, and masculine domination.

At 6:01 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, police received an active-shooting report from 315 White Star Circle. The residence stood outside Billings, Montana, in a subdivision beyond the municipal boundary. Eight members of one family had gathered there for their weekly dinner.
Twelve-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere placed the 911 call and attempted to save her family. Officers arrived while gunfire continued behind the residence. Within minutes, flames had engulfed the house.
Firefighters could not enter until law enforcement secured the property. The subdivision did not require fire hydrants, which further complicated the response. Firefighters continued working until approximately 1 a.m., but the fire destroyed the residence.
Inside, investigators found eight relatives representing four generations of a blended family. The victims were Dana Smith; his wife, Barb Smith; and his 92-year-old mother, Evelyn Smith. Evelyn used a wheelchair and lived in a nearby retirement community. The remaining victims were Dana and Barb’s daughter, Megan Ghekiere, and four children.
Megan’s children were Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7. Her stepchildren were Landon Ghekiere, 15, and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12. Megan’s husband, Adam Ghekiere, worked as an airport rescue firefighter in Billings. He heard the active-shooting dispatch while working and repeatedly called his family. After nobody answered, he drove across Billings and found the house burning.
The family normally held dinner on Friday rather than Sunday. Adam therefore believes the killer did not expect Landon and Charlotte to attend. Approximately two hours after reaching the property, Adam learned that his wife and all four children had died.
Relatives identified the killer as Megan’s older brother, Alan Smith, 44. Police found Smith outside the residence with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He later died at a hospital, increasing the total number of deaths to nine.
Relatives said he spent most days alone in his bedroom using his computer. Brad Ireland described him as profoundly isolated and said relatives did not know how he occupied his time online. Relatives said he had struggled for years to obtain or retain employment.
Brad Ireland said Smith could become verbally abusive but had not previously committed known physical violence.
Several weeks before the killings, Dana and Barb required Alan to leave their home. He returned unexpectedly during Sunday dinner and opened fire, according to surviving relatives. Ireland said Smith killed his grandmother, parents, sister, and the four children before setting the residence on fire.
The fire reduced the house to its foundation and created serious structural hazards. Those conditions have delayed evidence recovery and may prevent investigators from reconstructing every action inside the residence.
Charlotte’s final act remains among the clearest established facts. At 12 years old, she recognized the danger, called 911, and attempted to bring help to eight people trapped with an armed relative. Her call allowed officers to reach the property while the attack was still occurring.
Charlotte’s attempt to save her family occurred as family killings claimed a growing share of United States homicides.
From 2020 through 2025, other categories of lethal violence receded more rapidly than family and intimate-partner killings. Family relationships give perpetrators continued access to threatened victims even after escalating conflict demands separation.
Family and intimate-partner homicide has diverged from the broader decline in lethal violence across the United States. These killings constituted 21 percent of all homicides in 2025, compared with 15 percent in 2020. That change represents a 40 percent increase in their share of the national homicide total. Perpetrators within families maintain sustained access to victims, their homes, routines, and vulnerabilities.
Researchers cataloging United States mass killings since 2006 classified approximately 48 percent as family-related crimes. More than one homicide-suicide occurs daily across the United States. Intimate-partner violence constitutes the most common precursor. Many perpetrators kill within an existing relationship before taking their own lives.
President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth answered men’s documented depression, suicide, and homicide-suicide rates with a federal politics of dominance. Trump converted men’s reduced healthcare use and fourfold suicide rate into a manufactured “war on manhood.” Hegseth elevated testosterone, combat performance, and emotional suppression while excluding mental-health disclosure and domestic-violence prevention from his public program.
“Real men do not cry or discuss their feelings” teaches men to conceal distress rather than seek help. A peer-reviewed study examined 117 men with probable moderate depression. Reluctance to disclose mood symptoms corresponded with 63 percent lower odds of previous mental-health help-seeking. Men constituted 91 percent of perpetrators across 408 homicide-suicide cases, while firearms appeared in 88 percent. Researchers documented previous intimate-partner violence in 70 percent of cases examined across twelve cities.
A 2014 peer-reviewed study by Dennis Reidy and colleagues surveyed 600 heterosexual men. Distress over appearing insufficiently masculine significantly predicted previous intimate-partner violence, independent of other measured masculinity variables. The findings identify threatened masculine status as a measurable violence risk factor rather than a harmless private insecurity.
Hegseth imposed “male-level” physical standards for combat positions and initiated transgender service members’ removal. He conditioned Pentagon support for Scouting America upon eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. On July 15, 2026, Hegseth mandated annual testosterone screening for active-duty and reserve personnel aged thirty and older.
Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Marty Makary encouraged drugmakers to seek approval for treating low libido linked to unexplained testosterone deficiency. During an August 17 fundraiser for Representative Zach Nunn, Hegseth celebrated eliminating diversity programs and used a transgender slur. Trump and Hegseth converted male suffering into federal policy rewarding dominance while abandoning emotional disclosure and domestic-violence prevention.
Alan Smith killed eight relatives before shooting himself, placing the Montana massacre within an overwhelmingly male pattern of homicide-suicide. Peer-reviewed research connects concealed depressive symptoms with reduced help-seeking and threatened masculine status with previous intimate-partner violence. Trump invoked male suicide rates to declare a “war on manhood” rather than fund treatment or violence prevention.
