The Federalist Papers Aug 12, 2026
George Orwell wrote 1984 as a fictional warning, not an instruction manual.
Yet nearly eight decades after the novel was published, some of what he imagined feels disturbingly familiar.
Orwell envisioned a society where people lived under constant observation, where privacy barely existed, and where technology became a tool for watching ordinary citizens. He called it Big Brother. Today, we simply call much of it technology.
Look around.
Our phones know where we go. Apps collect enormous amounts of information about what we search, watch, buy, and click. Cameras are everywhere. Businesses have them. Cities have them. Doorbells have them. Millions of Americans voluntarily installed internet-connected cameras outside their own homes.
Then there is Big Tech.
The same platforms where we talk to friends, read the news, shop, argue politics, and share photographs are capable of building remarkably detailed pictures of our lives.
Most of this did not arrive because some government agency kicked down the door and demanded that we install a telescreen in the living room.
We bought the devices ourselves.
That may be the strangest part.
Technology has given us tremendous benefits, and nobody needs to pretend that every camera or smartphone is part of some sinister conspiracy. A Ring camera can catch a burglar. A smartphone can connect families across the country. Technology itself is not the enemy.
But Americans should still be asking how much privacy we are willing to trade for convenience.
The Founders could never have imagined a device sitting in our pockets that could potentially reveal our location, conversations, purchases, interests, relationships, and political views.
They did understand something else very well, unchecked power tends to grow.
Orwell’s world was fiction.
The uncomfortable question is how many pieces of that fictional world we have slowly accepted because they arrived wrapped in convenience.
Maybe 1984 was never meant to be an instruction manual.
Sometimes it feels like somebody forgot that.
