Skeleton Night Live

Over the years I have been lucky enough to submit a few packets to Saturday Night Live. When you apply to be a writer on SNL, they ask for a few different sketches that fulfill different functions: political, topical, commercial, Mango, etc.

One year, while doing my fifth draft of a soda commercial parody, I got really in my head and began spiraling. I had been staring at these sketches for so long, poking and prodding and tweaking, that it became impossible for me to know if they were coherent at all. This is what folks in the business call “having a normal one.”

When you write sketches for an SNL packet, you can pick which hosts/cast members are in your sketches. I realized that a few of my ideas involved skeletons. I think skeletons are very funny. So I decided, as an exercise, to write an entirely new packet of sketches for an episode of SNL hosted by a skeleton. This would give me a break from my “actual” packet and I could have fun writing dumb skeleton jokes.

After I finished the skeleton packet, I decided to swap out a few sketches from my “actual” packet with skeleton ones. I did not get the job. I would have loved to be the first 40 year-old to stay up late on a Tuesday. Now I live my days as a skeleton wearing a me costume.
