Two drone strikes reported in Mekelle amid recent clashes in Tigray

Mekelle, Tigray (Wegahta) - Two drone strikes were reported in Mekelle, the capital of Tigray region, on Thursday, with residents and children reportedly injured by shrapnel from one of the attacks, according to Tigray TV.

The broadcaster reported that a drone strike hit the Daero area, where residents and children were in the neighborhood. Shrapnel from the attack injured some of them, Tigray TV reported, however the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

A second drone strike was reported near the Northern Command or Air Force area, according to local sources.

There was no official statement from local authorities on the number of people injured or the extent of property damage.

The strikes come amid renewed tensions in Tigray, where clashes and drone strikes have been reported in recent weeks, raising fears of a return to wider conflict nearly four years after a peace agreement ended a devastating two-year war between Ethiopia’s federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
