Last week we covered Fable 5’s destruction. This week, we have more overreach by the Government, clamping down across all sectors.
But before we do, we’re going to take a moment to remember our friend Joshua, who died in a terrible accident. Many of us here in the community worked with and around him. A couple of us spoke with him just a few days ago. His influence in the Austin tech world is undeniable, and he spent a tremendous amount of energy lifting up those around him, regardless of whether he had a financial interest in their enterprise or not.
The Austin tech world would not be what it is today without him. For those of you who knew him, we’re sorry for your loss. He will be sorely missed.
Austen Allred@Austen
Devastating. We’ll miss you, Joshua. Austin and Texas won’t be the same without you.

Now onto the news. First up, Illinois will have a tax on crypto transactions and holdings. This is your signal to move to Texas.
Things could be worse. Fourteen countries have passed social media bans "to protect the kids” - - - which is leading to digital ID and restrictions on anyone who doesn’t want to hand over all their online information to the government. (i.e., anybody sane)

Meanwhile, because Anthropic doesn’t look bad enough, the news broke that the company’s been downgrading user experience AND storing their information without permission. Thanks for making Morpheus look even better, Dario.
Ihtesham Ali@ihtesham2005
Anthropic just got caught secretly downgrading users without telling them, charging full price for a lesser product, and storing every prompt for 30 days. The developer community is calling it the biggest violation of trust in AI history. Here is exactly what happened.

This week’s space has a special guest, the JUNGLE | Agent Olympics, who joins to talk about DeAI’s contribution to its World Cup prediction sequences. We also cover the White House’s insistence on an “unbreakable” code before allowing Anthropic to re-release Fable 5, and how such measures will drive the adoption of decentralized models. There’s also a Morpheus tokenomics discussion towards the end of the episode, which you won’t want to miss.
/brainpower throwback this week, where Ryan Condron (who has now created Mordiem.com) joins Bowen for a discussion on decentralized compute routing, both the practical and philosophical sides. Don’t turn shy away from seeing this Morpheus giant in action.
Let’s talk about Fable 5, when half the coding world’s best friend bit the dust. The US Government unexpectedly ordered a shutdown for all non-US users. Anthropic had no idea how to enforce that and pulled the plug for everyone.
ClaudeDevs@ClaudeDevs
As a result of a US government directive, we are suspending access to Claude Fable 5 for all users. You can continue to use all other Claude models. Here’s what this means for you: Across Claude products, new sessions will run on your selected default model or Opus 4.8, and

The US government, citing national security authorities, has issued an export control directive to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees. The net effect of

It took the government three days to nuke it. Could be a very simple reason.

But a good percentage also believe the White House is still offended about Anthropic’s “no” to mass surveillance in January.
Peter Girnus 🦅@gothburz
@MartinShkreli @AnthropicAI Agreed, and the post says the same in the back half: the capability's available from other public models today. If it's not about capability, the only variable left is the word "no" in January. That's what the directive is actually about.

Either way, the shutdown proved the necessity of open-source AI for all users.

AI has crossed the line where governments can ban it. Same as they do with any technology that shifts power. Lock it behind a license, a clearance, a fee, a border. We have seen this play before. We have seen it every time. Finance built two decks long ago. A yacht class that
