In another life, David could have been my dad. Ever since he joined the We are Childfree community as a curious older man ready to learn about others’ experiences, I’ve felt a kinship with him. And when we met Dave while he was on a cruise to the Canary Islands, and heard him say stuff like “embrace your individuality”, I caught myself thinking, where was this life lesson when I was younger?
Of course, if Dave had been my father, he wouldn’t have lived lived the life of freedom he has, may have had to conform more, and would have ended up a different person - closer to the conscientious-yet-cautious man who brought me life and brought me up. So, maybe a pointless thought experiment, but exactly the kind of spiritual question David loves to wonder about. He believes in reincarnation, and my favourite story from his upcoming portrait is how, as a child, he told his mother that he’s been here before, and he didn’t really like it the first time around!
So yeah, Dave’s one in a million. And like many of the happily childfree men we’ve run into, he’s not afraid of being different. He’s lived solo for almost all of his 75 years, enjoying a relative lack of responsibility, making the most of the time and space to follow his curiosity, and explore everything up to and including the meaning of life. It was a pleasure to meet on this plane of existence!
