The drug price con: Trump says cheaper. Grandma’s bill says otherwise.

A grandmother counts her pills on the kitchen table on the first of the month. Seven bottles. A calendar. A pen. She was doing it the morning the news came across the radio that the White House was killing the subsidy holding her Part D premium down. She did not look up. She has been counting pills for fifteen years. She knew what the number was going to be before anyone in Washington announced it.

They stood at a podium and told you they were slashing drug prices. Cameras flashed. TrumpRx. Most-favored-nation deals. A signed piece of paper waved like a war trophy. Then, quietly, three months before a midterm where affordability is the whole ballgame, this same administration killed the one program actually holding Medicare drug premiums down.

That is not a policy choice. That is a shell game. The same kind of game hustlers play on street corners but policy makers where nice suits. Same difference.

The Biden-era Part D subsidy, the one Republicans now sneer at as a “bailout,” cut the average senior’s premium by sixteen dollars a month. Sounds small until you remember the average standalone plan runs thirty-six. Kill the subsidy, and you have handed roughly half a Part D premium back to twenty-three million seniors as a bill. In 2027, the national average bid, what insurers charge Medicare per patient, jumps from $239 to $296. That is not stabilization. That is a mugging, dressed up in a lab coat and delivered by Dr. Oz on social media. But, MAGA support their party despite being ripped off. That’s not ignorance, it’s racism no longer in a costume.

Read his own words: “Premiums will go up by less than $10 for most Medicare recipients.” Let that sit. The CMS administrator, defending the cut, admits premiums are going up. Then calls it a win.

Pull up a Fox News clip from the Biden years. Any clip. Hannity is opening his monologue with inflation at a thirty-nine-year high, calling the White House liars. Laura Ingraham “Shut up and dribble” is warning viewers about the Thanksgiving turkey shortage, staging Biden’s economy as a crime scene and telling Democrats they should be worried. Larry Kudlow has the numbers ready. Gas at $4.91. Oil at $120.

All of it, according to him, the direct result of Biden’s “anti-fossil, woke policies.” Neil Cavuto is on “Your World” telling Biden to “put down the spending shovel,” fact-checking inflation numbers in real time.

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week: KITCHEN TABLE CRISIS. BIDENFLATION. INFLATION NATION. Grandma at the pharmacy counter, Grandma at the pump, Grandma at the grocery store. Grandma was on Fox News more than the anchors were.

Now pull up Kudlow from May 14, 2026. Same host. Same network. Gas is back over four dollars. Inflation is climbing again. And here is what he tells the viewer, on air, on the record:

“It’s $5 gasoline … $4.50 gasoline. OK. Live with it. It’s going to come way down once the war is over.”

Live with it.

In the same breath:

“It’s a small price to pay to take out Iran. It’s a small price to pay to prevent Iran from any nuclear capabilities whatsoever.”

A small price to pay.

The same man who spent 2022 treating $4.91 gasoline as an act of ideological sabotage now tells you to live with it, and calls it a small price to pay, because there is a war on with Iran. Not a policy failure. Not a crisis. Weather. Something you endure, like humidity, until it passes. The chyron does not read KITCHEN TABLE CRISIS anymore. It reads TRUMP DELIVERS. The B-roll is a fighter jet.

The eggs are unmentioned. Not one of them, not Hannity, not Ingraham, not Kudlow, not Cavuto, has said the words Medicare Part D on air this year. Not one has told the twenty-three million seniors watching their network that their premium is about to jump.

That silence is the tell. The performers did not quit the theater. They just stopped playing Grandma’s part.

Gas is up. Housing is up. Groceries are up. Now the government is stripping subsidies from the exact voters, elderly, rural, fixed-income, disproportionately GOP-loyal, who can least afford another $190 a year on the average standalone plan, and up to $684 on the plans that follow the full bid jump. These are the people who put MAGA hats on their heads at the county fair. This is how they get thanked.

Meanwhile, the money is flowing. Just not to them.

Republicans let the ACA subsidies expire. They cut Medicare Part D support. They squeezed SNAP. And in the same breath, they green-lit another forever war, this one in Iran, that Leslie Dach at Protect Our Care pegged at a hundred billion dollars against a five-billion-dollar drug program. Five billion to keep seniors in their prescriptions. A hundred billion to blow up somebody else’s country. That is the ledger. Written in plain arithmetic.

The same government that cannot find five billion for Grandma’s pills can find agents to fire three rounds into Ruben Ray Martinez, twenty-three years old, American citizen, on South Padre Island at three in the morning. He was driving home. Homeland Security Investigations pulled the trigger. A Texas grand jury declined to indict. Body-cam footage, released a year later, does not show what the agency said it showed. Martinez is one of at least three named American citizens killed by federal immigration agents since this surge began. Renée Good, thirty-seven, shot in her Minneapolis neighborhood in January. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, killed at a Houston traffic stop in July. The border “crisis” they invented has come home, and it is killing citizens on American streets.

Democrats fought for the cap. They passed the $2,000 out-of-pocket ceiling and gave Medicare, for the first time in the program’s history, the power to negotiate prices on the highest-cost drugs. Then they lost the House, lost the leverage, and watched the GOP dismantle the guardrails one CMS memo at a time. That is the story. Not “both sides.” One side built the wall between seniors and pharmaceutical price-gouging. The other is pulling the bricks out.

Here is what a government that gave a damn would do.

Turn Medicare loose on the whole formulary. The IRA gave CMS negotiation power on ten drugs, then twenty, then a slow crawl to sixty. Homeopathy dressed up as reform. The federal government is the largest drug buyer on the planet, and it walks into Pfizer’s office asking for a discount on ten SKUs. Let it bargain like the trillion-dollar buyer it is, on every drug, every year, and pass the savings straight through to premiums.

Match what the rest of the world pays, and mean it. Peg U.S. prices to what Canada, Germany, France, and Japan pay for the same molecule. If Pfizer sells it to Ottawa for eighty dollars, they do not get to bill Medicare four hundred. Cap insulin at thirty-five dollars for every American. Diabetics under sixty-five die too. And break the patent-evergreening racket, where Pharma tweaks a molecule to extend a monopoly seven years while cancer patients ration pills.

Then reinstate the Part D subsidy, not as a temporary “demo,” but as law, and cap out-of-pocket at $2,000 for every American. A cancer diagnosis at fifty-four should not cost you the house.

A grandmother would not know a Congressional Budget Office score if it landed in her lap. She knows what sixteen dollars is. She knows what it means to choose one bottle over another when the month runs long. That is the whole ledger. Washington keeps making it complicated because complication is where the money hides.

None of this is radical. Allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices polls at eighty-five percent overall, and seventy-seven percent among Republicans, in KFF’s September 2024 Health Tracking Poll. The only people it threatens are pharmaceutical shareholders, insurance middlemen, and the politicians who take their checks.

So here is what Fox will not ask, and MAGA will not answer:

If Trump is slashing drug prices, why is your mother’s Part D bill going up?

The border was the crisis, they told us. Now their agents shoot American citizens and grand juries walk away.

If deficits mattered under Biden, why do they not matter for a war in Iran?

If MAGA is the working-class movement, why do its policies keep landing on the working class like a hammer?

You already know the answer. You’ve known it since the tax cut. You’ve known it since the tariffs jacked the price of your F-150. You’ve known it every time a politician in a flag pin voted to make your life a little more expensive and called it freedom.

Americans deserve better. Not better talking points. Better outcomes. A drug you can afford. A premium that doesn’t eat your grocery money. A government that spends five billion on your grandmother before it spends a hundred billion on a war she never asked for. A country where a twenty-three-year-old citizen driving home doesn’t take three rounds through the windshield from an agent who walks away clean.

That’s not left or right. That’s the deal. Right now, one party is breaking it while the other is trying, imperfectly, to hold the line.

My mother is still at the kitchen table. Seven bottles. A calendar. A pen. She will pay the new premium because she has to. She will not forget who raised it.

Neither should you.
