I want to tell you something the researchers are finally catching up to, and something I learned the hard way in a VA parking lot at 2 AM.

A new scoping review just confirmed what a lot of us already knew in our gut: loneliness is one of the strongest predictors of suicide risk in veterans — stronger, in a lot of cases, than combat exposure itself. Read that again. It’s not always the war that gets you. It’s the silence after it. Researchers are now openly asking whether it’s “time to reframe our approach to veteran suicide prevention” — moving away from a purely clinical model and toward one built on connection and purpose. Younger veterans without a spouse or kids are dying at higher rates than older ones. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for vets under 45. The overall veteran suicide rate is still nearly double the civilian rate.
