The Christian Past That Wasn't in the News

A quick note to highlight to opportunities this week to talk about The Christian Past That Wasn’t and separation of church and state.

Yesterday, Caleb Campbell hosted me on his podcast Disarming Leviathan.

We did indeed discuss many issues important to the founding myth and we skimmed through the contents of The Christian Past That Wasn’t. Caleb is a thoughtful questioner, and I have enjoyed both visits to his podcast.

On Wednesday, I was able to talk about the book to a different audience. The Freedom from Religion Foundation asked me to discuss historical claims made in Charlie Kirk bills which are being introduced in state legislatures around the nation. The program is a weekly YouTube show called Secular Spotlight. Thanks to Ryan Jayne and Mickey Dollens for a great interview.

The bills that I have seen would require schools to teach false history and do so without any input from state boards of education. The bill bypasses existing due process for enacting curriculum standards. The FFRF alerted lawmakers to the factual errors in these bills and thus far that has not mattered to the Republican sponsors.

For specific information, tune in to the show. I can just tell you that Ben Franklin’s call to prayer makes an appearance. Also, it would be a really good idea for those lawmakers to stop reading David Barton and start reading The Christian Past That Wasn’t.

Even though one audience was religious and the other secular, I suspect they agree on at least one thing: separation of church and state is a good principle. This is something we can unite around.
