A return to normalcy this week after my Lollapalooza adventures. We’re getting back to Beatles Season with a John episode that looks at a funny little moment in his songwriting career: John Lennon, professional songwriter.

For a brief period, John was writing songs for other singers—something that’s fun to think about now, considering the kind of artist he would soon become. We’ll listen to some of those songs, think about why he tried his hand at this particular career path, and what it tells us about his songwriting mindset at the time.

And maybe most interestingly, we’ll look at why he abandoned this side of his career as his songwriting became more personal, more ambitious, and more unmistakably John.
